Thanh Toan Bridge, Hue

#27 of 139 in Things to do in Hue
Spanning a countryside canal, Thanh Toan Bridge serves as a fine example of a Japanese-style tile-roofed bridge. See the elaborately carved arched entrance decorated with ancient Vietnamese and Chinese calligraphy, and notice how, from a distance, the bridge resembles a traditional house. A childless wife of an important Mandarin and a native of the village, Thi Dao, built the bridge for her fellow villagers and travelers who needed rest. Look for a small altar dedicated to her memory, which the villagers laid upon emperor’s orders in 1925. • I took a half-day afternoon tour with the backpackers hostel and it was beautiful. We drove through rice fields and my driver took me to this bridge and a couple of out-of-the-way pagodas. We also wen...  more »
  • Next to the bridge roof tile is a native of markets but not crowded but gives visitors the feel of a countryside lush and idyllic Vietnam. Inside the market is women who are staring at a livery stable miết foil hats. At the country's markets, you'll be enjoying the food, flavor Hue by the locals mashed potato cakes as giant fish processing, rice vermicelli soup cake, Great steel trap Cards. In addition, the village of wine bottles Scoot, Vinh is also famous wine bar sold in this country markets.

  • Nice view when the lights are turned on. I've been there 2 times. During the second one the lights weren't on, I think because of the rain. Difficult access, small routes. Bikes or motorbikes needed.
  • Beautiful ancient bridge, the area has suffered massive flooding in the past with this bridge almost completely submerged yet it continues to stand here. The area is quite poor with mostly farmers and a small but busy market, it gives a totally different viewpoint of Vietnamese life compared to the cities. I am pleased we visited during our Intrepid tour of Vietnam, even with all the rain! Don't come here far just for the bridge, come to soak up the culture.
  • Of all the roofed bridges I've seen this is DEFINITELY top 7. Worth a look, it's just an old wooden bridge with a couple of old women selling drinks next to it.
  • Interesting old wooden bridge with more interesting rural folks & landscape. Nice to sit inside and soak in the ambience amidst the paddy fields.
  • It's a nice bridge. Rich history, but not much to do in the area.
