Ton Duc Thang Museum, Ho Chi Minh City

3.0
Dedicated to a former president of Vietnam, Ton Duc Thang Museum offers interesting insight into the life and times of the man known affectionately as "Uncle Ton." Consisting of eight display rooms, the small museum details Ton's early life, his rise to political prominence, and his ongoing efforts to maintain peace in the nation. Don't miss the exhibits relating to French colonial rule, which explain a particularly complex period in the country's history. • We didn’t enter the Museum but just walked around the garden as respite from the horns and traffic in the main road. Not particularly big but nice trees and flowers to have a look at with a toddler.  more »

  • Quality not quantity! A relatively small museum on two floors but with well-designed exhibits about the life and times of Uncle Tôn. The “rice grinding” and Tiger cages room has audio and allows an “experiential” visit. Very well done. The explanations are clear and bilingual. The different media for the making portraits upstairs are worth examining. Note the opening hours. Entrance is free. A restaurant is also on the premises so you can have lunch during the midday closing hours. Some parking for cars and scooters is available on site.
  • Free and good exhibitions. Historical context is a bit light, so I would recommend visiting war remenants first, then here.
  • Toc Duc Thang or Uncle Ton is the first President of the Social Republic of Vietnam and the first Vietnamese to be awarded with Lenin Peace Award. Being the first President of the Social Republic of Vietnam, Uncle Ton is also the first of the country to be awarded Lenin Peace Award as well as the only Vietnamese to engage in the anti-war activities of 1917. The museum, located on number 5 of the riverside street which is also named Ton Duc Thang, was established in order to celebrate President Ton’s 100th birthday in 1988. Housed in the former residence of Tran Thien Khiem – Premier of the South Vietnam Government, this place is also near Ba Son Shipyard, where Ton Duc Thang used to work as a mechanic. Not really a big one, Ton Duc Thang museum has 8 display wards with artifacts and miniature that ceptured Ton Duc Thang’s life. Detailed record of his early upbringing, including pictures of his hometown in An Giang and O Moi Boat Station from where the president used to go to school, is exhibited in Ceremony room. Other rooms focus on his ongoing struggle for peace – the most significant phase in his life. Especially, “Con Son Pearl” Exhibition Room is where hell-on-Earth Con Dao Prison – in which he has spent 15 difficult years, is illustrated.
  • Great place for lunch with both local and western food, also a great choice of coffee and other drink. Car parks available is also a good point here.
  • Good place to visit and understand the Vietnam war. The Con Dao prison exhibit is well design
