Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral, Ho Chi Minh City

3.6
#1 of 20 in Historic Sites in Ho Chi Minh City
Church Tourist Spot
Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral stands as a testament to the impact of the French culture and Christian civilization on Indochina. The neo-Romanesque red-brick cathedral was considered the most beautiful church in the French colonies at the time it was built (between 1877 and 1883). The two belfries, which were added in 1895, rise to the height of 60 m (190 ft). See some of the original stained-glass windows inside the entrance and the devotional tablets on interior walls. The cathedral was the center of media attention in 2005, when thousands of devotees flocked around the Virgin Mary statue that reportedly shed tears in front of the main entrance. • Enjoy this European cathedral on Sunday English mass at 9:30 but get there early for a seat. Very old and hot but beautiful. Lots of tourists and brides taking wedding photos across from post office.  more »
  • It is a reminder how strong French presence was in Vietnam. I believe the Cathedral used to be extremely beautiful. It is lacking the funds for further and regular maintenance hence the contribution w...  more »
  • Doesnt look like the original. Not a great church to go to but you have several places to see around so just go for 10 mins and see.  more »

  • Vibrant church community. English language mass on Sunday at 9:30am. The church interior is quite simple. The small side chapels with the many thanksgiving boards from decades ago are touching.
  • Beautiful church in the heart of Saigon. One of the oldest as well. From the front of the church, there is a devotional statue to Mary and usually many devotees are there during the day time. The church has 2 main steeples on each site and as you enter, the church as very high ceilings, and there is a feeling of awe. The main sitting area of the church is reserved only for worshipers, tourists can only admire from the small area by the entrance. It's a nice peaceful place to visit.
  • Gorgeous landmark in the heart of the city, it really stands out to the surrounding architecture. Unfortunately it was being renovated during our visit so there was no entry but it's still a fantastic sight to see.
  • Located at the heart of Ho Chi Minh's district, the Notre Dame Cathedral is a must-see tourist spot in Vietnam. The church looks majestic in person. It is also accessible via walking if you are around or via Uber taxis which are genereally cheap.
  • Beautiful red brick church in district 1 Hochiminh city, close to the city post office. Good place to see old architecture patterns of the city.
