Giac Lam Pagoda, Ho Chi Minh City
(3.8/5 based on 80+ reviews on the web)
Enjoy intense colors in an urban sanctuary of Giac Lam Pagoda, a historic Buddhist pagoda believed to be the oldest temple in Ho Chi Minh City. Standing 65 m (213 ft) tall, this seven story stupa set in a lovely garden with a big Bodhi tree houses countless gilded figures blending Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. Built in 1744, the temple features a seated statue of the colorful haloed Buddha of Enlightenment with five children climbing all over him, and an elaborate candle holder with images of Buddha. Climb the pagoda and enjoy a panorama of the city from one of its octagonal balconies. • This pagoda was far more than what we thought, but traffic we preferred to walk. We arrived so late at night. We left on our left the pagoda itself, seven storeys high, for us go directly to the temple in front of a funny chubby and white Buddha and a Buddhist cemetery. The temple has particularly impressed us by its very special atmosphere. It is very different from what we have seen before that in vietnam. Find it us quite difficult to understand the meaning and meanings of the characters even if we can recognize some "assemblies" (as the "Arhats", these ten judges of the underworld who brandished a pitchfork to seize of the wicked, and round faces, the prominent belly, the joviality and costumes set apart them from the Chinese, steeper Arhats) or groups of such Buddhas five Buddhas (Cakyamouni and four Boddhisatvas) typical apparently the cult Nam Bo, or the nine Dragons of the Buddha that spit water. The atmosphere here is very special, very calm, very collected. What impresses also, what are all ex votes and of course 500 tablets of worship relating to nine generations and that have been reported to Hue to this pagoda. Then we saw the Jade Emperor, a figure Taoist who reigns over the world of the immortals. Finally, and may be in the making, a statue of Ho Chi Minh City with its altar, as if him also, generally good it was, was on the way to deification as was the case in the past in China and the Viet Nam...

  • Old sprawling temple grounds with a school for monks on the grounds. It very much seemed to be a pagoda in use, and not just designed for picture taking. It isn't the most beautiful pagoda I've seen, but it was worth a wonderful walk through the grounds seeing all the monks and nuns attending to their studies and maintaining the grounds.
