#9 of 39 in Museums in Hanoi
Admire bronze pieces from the Dong Son period (3rd century BCE to 3rd century CE), marvel at imperial Vietnamese jewelry, and learn about the French occupation of Vietnam at Vietnam National Museum of History. Formerly an archeological research facility during the occupation, the museum today contains around 200,000 artifacts arranged in five major sections. The building itself represents an attraction: designed by French architect Ernest Hebrard, it displays an Indochine architectural style blending French colonial and Vietnamese traditional architecture. We visit on the recommendation of an acquaintance was an exhibit of more than the imagination. Knowledge is nothing about Viet Nam art history, but is plenty impressive. I thought wants to turn the next time slowly and look at without a lot of time, but did not take place. I think that the establishment culture of Viet Nam touched obediently, without preconceptions.

The museum covers prehistory right up to the dynadties. Most descriptions in english as well as vietnamese. A bit small, but worth an hour's visit. Be sure to look in the gardens at the back where the...  more »

Closed randomly when it was listed as open. No reasoning. 30+ degree day. Also followed by a closed Vietnamese army museum. Great for tourism.

Nice museum in an old building explaining the whole Vietnamese History. The most interesting was the part about the revolution, which is in another building, just across the street. Special thanks to the staff who helped me to carry the stroller of my baby upstairs!!

A surprisingly well assembled collection of artefacts along with clear explanations of what you're looking at, and why they matter. We didn't check opening times, and they closed for lunch about thirty minutes after we arrived. We went for lunch ourselves and were admitted for free with our original tickets when we came back.

Wonderful experience, really makes you appreciate the culture and history of the Vietnamese people. An absolute must see

The museum consists of two buildings that are across the street from one another. One building focuses on the more ancient side of Vietnam's history, whereas the other focuses on the country's occupation by and involvement with other countries. For my own, and I'd imagine most foreigners, the latter was much more enjoyable. The displays tell the story of how Vietnam came to be a sitting ground for the French, Japanese, the U.S., and how its people fought to take back their country. As someone with friends and family who were alive and in northern Vietnam during this time, it was incredibly interesting. We spent a bit over an hour here, although we rushed towards the end to catch an appointment.
