Thap Rua Tower, Hanoi

3.9
#89 of 745 in Things to do in Hanoi
Standing in the middle of Sword Lake, Thap Rua Tower, or "Turtle Tower," commemorates the legend of Vietnamese warrior Le Loi. This tower was built on the Turtle Islet in 1886, but is based on an older structure, Ta Vong Temple, which was built in the 17th and 18th centuries. This attraction cannot be accessed, so you must simply admire it from afar. Go for a walk around the lake and take in views of this historic landmark, which is beautifully lit up at night. • Beautifully landscaped Lake, in the middle of the old town, if you can be sure see the grandiose Fireworks at Tet (Chinese new year)!

  • In the midst of the Hoa Kiem Lake, in the sector called Old Quarter of the city, emerges this tower which can be seen from the shore and gives angles, especially at night, for those who enjoy photography. There is no reference of their origin, use and more still why is submerged in the Lake. It is part of the precariousness that is tourism in Viet Nam. It is not something to go see it, especially if you fail to take conscience of its existence when you tour the city by the shore of the Lake.

  • Nice Lake to walk around , I believe now that a lot of work has been been down to clean up the Lake and I have been told that there are Swans on the Lake now too.  more »

  • Legendary landmark tortoise island in the middle of Hoan Kiem lake. Photo from far for the scrapbook a must, for the historical value alone is worth it, though not much to be seen. Not sure whether accessible by boat. Reflection in the lake makes photo nice.
  • So quaint and historical. Love it
  • So beautiful. A symbol of Hanoi
  • Small old tower in the middle of the lake. Cute for pictures.
  • So random to be there, but beautiful
