Temple of Literature & National University, Hanoi

(4.1/5 based on 6,500+ reviews on the web)
Devoted to the Chinese ancient teacher and philosopher Confucius, Temple of Literature & National University houses the first university of Vietnam founded in the 11th century. Constructed under Ly Thanh Tong dynasty in the typical Vietnamese traditional architectural style--from wood and tiles--the temple features five historic courtyards. See the statues representing the ancient teacher and his honored disciples, the 82 stelas commemorating notable scholars, and a small collection of student and mandarin traditional uniforms. Walk the lanes planted with century-old trees and look for a tortoise head--you can see students rubbing it for good luck before taking exams. Put Temple of Literature & National University at the forefront of your travel plans using our Hanoi itinerary planner.

  • When visiting temples in Hanoi I was a little bit disappointed because Inalways expected more. True that after two wars that is difficult. Go there keeping that in mind and trying to learn from them a...  more »
  • There are few informational signs, so bring a good guide book or come with a tour. With the commentary we got, this is a fascinating landmark and insight into Vietnam's history. Mondays are not busy.
  • With a typical Vietnamese architecture, this University, is known as the best of the Viet Nam. Students come to rub the turtles head for luck in their studies. The bottom of doors are raised to block the passage of the evil spirit. Beautiful bonsais are divided into five classes. A place that do not miss through Hanoi.
