Historic Site
Devoted to the Chinese ancient teacher and philosopher Confucius, Temple of Literature & National University houses the first university of Vietnam founded in the 11th century. Constructed under Ly Thanh Tong dynasty in the typical Vietnamese traditional architectural style--from wood and tiles--the temple features five historic courtyards. See the statues representing the ancient teacher and his honored disciples, the 82 stelas commemorating notable scholars, and a small collection of student and mandarin traditional uniforms. Walk the lanes planted with century-old trees and look for a tortoise head--you can see students rubbing it for good luck before taking exams. Put Temple of Literature & National University at the forefront of your travel plans using our Hanoi itinerary planner.

  • I loved the place. We had to walk through very busy streets to get there, but it was worth it. I was impressed with the long history of this first Vietnamese University.  more »

  • Our son enjoyed this place even though it's really just some old buildings, nice gardens and relics. There was plenty space to run around and no queues.  more »

  • A few nice buildings and a greenish courtyard in a fairly small enclosure. It is interesting to learn that there have been a thousand years of higher education and testing. But, not worth more than 45 minutes, as there are only about 2 or 3 signs explaining what you are seeing. The concessions sales inside a historical place are off-putting.
  • Quiet and pleasant place to see.. Can buy Souveniors in affordable price
  • Quite beautiful buildings in the center of Hanoi. Beautiful statues and interesting topiary based on the 12 sacred animals. Arrived at the time when lots of vietnamese school children were in attendance to make offerings to Confucious. Our children got bored quite quickly. Even the gift shop, full of usual nik naks, was boring to them. Very crowded. The lotus ponds had nothing in. I imagine they can be quite beautiful but not in April. A one time event for us. Entrance fee is 30,000 Dong.
  • Interesting place, students are very serious workers.
  • Good :D
