Temple of Literature & National University, Hanoi

4.1
Devoted to the Chinese ancient teacher and philosopher Confucius, Temple of Literature & National University houses the first university of Vietnam founded in the 11th century. Constructed under Ly Thanh Tong dynasty in the typical Vietnamese traditional architectural style--from wood and tiles--the temple features five historic courtyards. See the statues representing the ancient teacher and his honored disciples, the 82 stelas commemorating notable scholars, and a small collection of student and mandarin traditional uniforms. Walk the lanes planted with century-old trees and look for a tortoise head--you can see students rubbing it for good luck before taking exams. Museum that offers no great visions. Simple walk through what used to be the ancient University of Hanoi, in context the Museum offers little and is primarily characterized by cheap souvenir shops inside.

Well worth a visit although it is not all that stunning. Didn't know much about Confucianism before my visit, left the place a bit more enlightened.  more »

A few nice buildings and a greenish courtyard in a fairly small enclosure. It is interesting to learn that there have been a thousand years of higher education and testing. But, not worth more than 45 minutes, as there are only about 2 or 3 signs explaining what you are seeing. The concessions sales inside a historical place are off-putting.

Quite beautiful buildings in the center of Hanoi. Beautiful statues and interesting topiary based on the 12 sacred animals. Arrived at the time when lots of vietnamese school children were in attendance to make offerings to Confucious. Our children got bored quite quickly. Even the gift shop, full of usual nik naks, was boring to them. Very crowded. The lotus ponds had nothing in. I imagine they can be quite beautiful but not in April. A one time event for us. Entrance fee is 30,000 Dong.
