St Joseph Cathedral, Hanoi

(3.6/5 based on 1,500+ reviews on the web)
Explore a Catholic spiritual haven designed in the Neo-Gothic style at St Joseph Cathedral. Built more than 120 years ago with stone slabs and bricks, the structure resembles Notre Dame in Paris and represents one of earliest structures erected by the French colonialists. As you arrive at the site, notice the two square-shaped towers, each fitted with five bells. Inside, observe arched windows fitted with stained glass, and notice how the vaulted ceiling resembles those constructed in medieval Europe. Expect limited visiting hours, especially during religious ceremonies. Put St Joseph Cathedral at the forefront of your travel plans using our Hanoi travel itinerary planner.

  • Nice cathedral in middle of Old Quarters. Makes good photo shoot on the outside. The cathedral is more impressive inside and its a good place for believers to come pray and seek solace from the hustle and bustle of Hanoi city.
  • The priest here does not speak English. He speaks Vietnamese and French. As a Christian, I have no problem believing in Jesus Christ, but I was not warmly welcomed. I have met believers of LDS who are more open hearted than these guys. The place is beautiful. I also had the problem of getting locked in. True believers know the Truth in their heart. There is no need to visit this place, unless you are so in need of God's Grace, and even then you will be lucky if they speak to you personally. The true temple is the body. Peace.
  • It is depending on the purpose and the point of view of the visitor; however, the Cathedral is not only the single entity that witnesses the up and down of Hanoi, it is the most common place for true Hanoi people. Some people might suppose that the Cathedral is not beautiful but to me, I capture the sanctuary from its stone steps and the way Hanoi people go there for praying in the evening. It is about and always about peace for everyone
  • Magnificently old cathedral! We were lucky enough to arrive around 6pm on Sunday and get a peek through the front doors that are normally closed.
  • A must-see place of Hanoi. Near old quarter and many other interesting places, the old, ancient and peaceful cathedral have been one of the symbols of Hanoi.
