St Joseph Cathedral, Hanoi

3.8
#6 of 23 in Historic Sites in Hanoi
Explore a Catholic spiritual haven designed in the Neo-Gothic style at St Joseph Cathedral. Built more than 120 years ago with stone slabs and bricks, the structure resembles Notre Dame in Paris and represents one of earliest structures erected by the French colonialists. As you arrive at the site, notice the two square-shaped towers, each fitted with five bells. Inside, observe arched windows fitted with stained glass, and notice how the vaulted ceiling resembles those constructed in medieval Europe. Expect limited visiting hours, especially during religious ceremonies. Put St Joseph Cathedral at the forefront of your travel plans using our Hanoi travel itinerary planner.

St. Joseph's Cathedral is truly an awe inspiring sight near the old quarter of Hanoi. Not a long walk from the Lake of the Restored Sword.  more »

Beautiful Cathedral. We were lucky to arrive during the mass in french (a bit late however...). A place to advise the french expat.

Surprised, in fact, a profile similar to the Notre Dame, in the heart of the Vietnamese capital, fruit of years of French colonialism. The temple itself is not exceptional, although its square and the surrounding neighborhood of great nightlife is interesting. Visit advisable.

Sunday Mass in French @ 1030. First time attending a different language mass.. it's accorded to the normal mass elsewhere but only is in French.. An interesting and different experience.

Neo-Gothic designed cathedral. Very impressive but also a little bit scary when you have batophobia like me. Haha. I didn't see the inside but the facade was super stunning.

Stunning building and incredibly well looked after. The interior is wow! And I'm not even religious.
