Lake of the Restored Sword (Hoan Kiem Lake), Hanoi

4.3
#1 of 305 in Parks in Vietnam
Situated at the rim of the Old Quarter among the city's most popular attractions, the green shores of Lake of the Restored Sword (Hoan Kiem Lake) offer a break from sightseeing and provide a quiet spot for people-watching. Notice the temple--topped with a red star--on a small islet in the middle of the lake. Apart from being the city's emblem, it commemorates a local legend, which involves an Excalibur-like sword. The story goes that a local dragon god gave a magical sword to a 15th-century Vietnamese emperor who used it in an uprising against the Ming Dynasty. When the war was won, a giant turtle emerged from the lake and took back the sword to return it to heaven. The lake is home to a rare species of soft-shell turtles. Lake of the Restored Sword (Hoan Kiem Lake) is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Hanoi Edition.

  • This is the most popular destination for tourists. However, especially tourists that don't know any Vietnamese at all, you may want to be careful when purchasing souvenirs here because many people will try to increase the price unbelievably high. The streets around the lake will be walk-only from Friday night to Sunday night, and there will be many volunteers organizing traditional games right on the road, feel free to join them and experience all the games you like. Be careful not only the prices from the shops but also of your belongings. Even Hanoian gets pickpocket easily, it's not uncommon for tourists being pickpocket when they visit the walk-only streets and the Old Quarter.
  • Nice place for shopping. There are many traditional store that selling many thing that tourist needs. And every friday , Saturday and sunday night they open the night market. The price is more cheaper than usual. They open on 19:00 until 22:00
  • ***BE CAREFUL, I got pickpocketed around the lake, in the busy section, where there are sellers. I had a small bag on my shoulder and I suddenly felt it was much lighter, I turned around real quick and got SO lucky, the guy had my wallet in his hands I just took it back. It all happened so quickly. Other than that, it is a nice area, very cute place to wander around.
  • Guom lake is the very heart of Hanoi city. It’s a must see place when you guys visit Hanoi. Just few minutes walking to Old quarter. They have walking street every weekend, with many activities, kids, street food stalls... Recommend walking. But if you are super lazy, they offer electric car with reasonable price. Haha
  • One of my favorite spots in Hanoi. Walking around the lake is really nice and relaxing. You may have the chance to see some women dancing. You can sit down and observe the Vietnamese around here. Other than the pagoda area, the lake is not as crowded as you may imagine.
