Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture, Da Nang

Detailing the peculiar Hindu heritage of coastal Vietnam, Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture houses the largest collection of Cham artifacts in the world, with exquisite pieces ranging from the 2nd to 15th century CE. Featuring some 300 stone and terracotta pieces, the museum showcases masterpieces of Indic carving and architecture with elaborate ornaments rescued from Angkor Wat and My Son after a week of U.S. carpet bombing in August 1969. The 1919 French colonial building includes a large sculpture garden with highly ornate mythical creatures set in stone. Get one of the audio guides in English (you'll need to show ID), and afterwards browse souvenir replicas of altars and lingas. • A very informative museum with some amazing artifacts. It’s a relatively small museum and one can do the tour in an hour or so
  • Small museum that's worth a visit if you want to find out more about one of the ancient civilisations that preceded modern Vietnam. Give yourself about 1 hour for this museum, which consists mostly of sculpture artefacts.
  • Its ok. Didnt really grab us. Saving part for me was the photo gallery. Some great shots there to enjoy.
  • This small museum is a gem. 500 excellent specimens of Champa Hindu Culture are housed in one well-preserved and lighted museum which is a marvel by itself having survived the terrible war years in the 60's and the dominant Buddhist culture of the Vietnamese. To think that it predates the Khmers in Cambodia requires a new mindset - for the Champas highly sophisticated lifestyle and religiosity must have influenced the Khmers - their traditional enemies - more than I thought. I thank the Vietnamese government for preserving their links to their golden past although it was Hindu-based and completely alien to their modern lifestyles. I was completely entranced by a visit to the site of the Champa Temples near Mý Son where these relics came from...another well-preseved site worth visiting. My humble pics of what moved me in this museum is my contribution to the epic culture of the lost empire of the Champas whose facial features are depicted in the murals of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom as the "barbaric enemies" of the Khmers when they possibly inspired Khmer art and architecture - and civilisation - in the first place.
  • Some great Cham stone carving and sculpture. Defiantly influenced by the Khymer of Siem Reip and Anckor Wat

Where to stay in Da Nang

Da Nang contains surprisingly abundant hotel options, despite its relatively low-key tourism. The rainiest season lasts from September to December, while the drier spring sees more travelers; still, you generally don't need to book a room very far in advance. A broad range of hostels for backpackers on budgets clusters near the beach and on the west side of the Han River. Spectacular resorts line the oceanfront, many offering private beach access, spa packages, water sports, and diving.
