Cave Nature / Park
A three-story medical safe house carved into the side of a cave, Hospital Cave was once a secret stronghold during the American-Vietnam War. Located in thick foliage nearing the entrance to the national park, the bomb-proof hospital represents an impressive feat of engineering, with a labyrinth of treatment rooms, offices, ammunition rooms, and even a small theater and swimming pool. Amble your way through empty, eery hallways, which served as home to many of the National Liberation Front or Vietcong from the hospital's completion in 1963 until 1975. You can hire a guide to take you through the hospital, then grab some local cuisine at the onsite restaurant. Put Hospital Cave at the forefront of your travel plans using our Cat Ba itinerary maker.

Where to stay in Cat Ba

Though the archipelago as a whole has a reputation for being less touristy than the areas to the north, you wouldn't be able to tell as much by seeing the main town of Cat Ba. The town represents the most popular place to stay, with a number of budget hotels lining the waterfront, and some more exclusive resorts set a short way out of town, filling the space with pools, spas, and restaurants. Many people come here as part of a tour, so accommodations will already be arranged. Some tour boats bring visitors to the hotels on Cat Ba, while others lay anchor for the night, with guests sleeping in cosy cabins aboard the ship.

  • This was such a cool spot to visit. We parked our scooter and got our ticket at a little spot across the street from the entrance way. Once we walked in, there was nobody else there at all, no staff a...  more »
  • very close to town center historical and interesting place seeing puppets of eople being treated in a cave hospitel during vietnam war while catba island was bombed for a long while...realy connected ...  more »
  • Nice cave and is quiet a site to see, the upstairs natural cave is a good example of the karst landscape and has some drip stone features if I remember correctly. Not bad for 40k. Guy across the road ...  more »

  • Nice view to the valley from entrance, but... Inside are just concrete walls :) doesn't worth it. And... it's possible to enter for free! :) If you pass the entrance by the main asphalt road for 50 metres and turn right just after rock - there will be exit, which is the second entrance at the same time :) Не стоит того. Просто бетон внутри. Походить там можно разве что бесплатно - для этого, когда подъезжаете по асфальтовой дороге, проедьте мимо 50 метров и сверните за скалой на право. В конце тропинки - второй вход (он же выход) :)
  • Probably not worth spending the work to get there but you can see a lot of the nature of Cat Ba while the taxi or bus is carrying you there. The trip through the cave is done within 15 minutes. And the cafe at the entrance is also not worth to go in.
  • About a 15 minute ride from town. Best to go on your way to the National Park. Admission is a bit high (40,000 VND = $1.80 USD) for a quick walk through the cave. The hospital was built inside a cave during the 1960's during the Vietnam-American War due to the bombings of Cat Ba. It is 3 levels: the first is the hospital and made of concrete. The second is a natural cave, and the third was closed at the time of the visit.
  • The cave in itself is very interresting, but they doubled the price (40000VND) and no guided tour anymore... Desapointed to learn nothing about how they lived in there...
  • Interesting historic place. Entrance fee is 40k, guide is free (tip is appreciated though). Take a guide, otherwise it's just looking at empty concrete rooms.
