Hospital Cave, Cat Ba

2.8
A three-story medical safe house carved into the side of a cave, Hospital Cave was once a secret stronghold during the American-Vietnam War. Located in thick foliage nearing the entrance to the national park, the bomb-proof hospital represents an impressive feat of engineering, with a labyrinth of treatment rooms, offices, ammunition rooms, and even a small theater and swimming pool. Amble your way through empty, eery hallways, which served as home to many of the National Liberation Front or Vietcong from the hospital's completion in 1963 until 1975. You can hire a guide to take you through the hospital, then grab some local cuisine at the onsite restaurant. • I passed by the cave on my way back from the national park and decided to give it a try. The entry fee is 40k and for 5k you can park your bike. The cave looks very interesting but I wish there had be...  more »
  • Very cool to see, the caves are pretty big and the rooms look nice and tidy. Would suggest going to this place if you go to cat ba for sure!  more »
  • Originally used during the Vietnam was as an Hospital, this cave is loaded with history. It is pretty amazing to visit if you have an hour to kill before or after your Halong Bay boat tour...  more »

  • Very small (short visit for that price: 40.000). And almost not information. Could provide more info and better guides. Check the entrance(s) first. Maybe we got scammed and the entrance is free and we just paid to some random guide.
  • The cave was nice and the concrete structure, built in 1940’s or something, too. It was a pretty small place and not worth the price (40k vnd entrance + 5k vnd for moped parking). There was a guide inside the cace who offered his services. We said no thanks but he tagged along nevertheless. Compared to the Trung Trang cave this wasn’t worth visiting.
  • Very disappointing. The cave is small and inside it is only concrete walls constructed in the cave. Maybe some informational documentation, movies, photos or something educational would help to make this place a bit more interesting. Does not worse the 45000 dong (5000 for parking).
  • Very interesting place to visit. Be extra careful, since all the stairs are extremely slippery. On you way there, you might need to cross a small river. Wear flip flops, so you won't get your shoes wet. Across the road from the cave they have small cafeteria with free WiFi and bathrooms.
  • It’s nice but dunno why there is the same price like into the National park. You are gonna spend the just about 25min.

Where to stay in Cat Ba

Though the archipelago as a whole has a reputation for being less touristy than the areas to the north, you wouldn't be able to tell as much by seeing the main town of Cat Ba. The town represents the most popular place to stay, with a number of budget hotels lining the waterfront, and some more exclusive resorts set a short way out of town, filling the space with pools, spas, and restaurants. Many people come here as part of a tour, so accommodations will already be arranged. Some tour boats bring visitors to the hotels on Cat Ba, while others lay anchor for the night, with guests sleeping in cosy cabins aboard the ship.
