Cannon Fort, Cat Ba

4.1
Cannon Fort offers scenic views of a bay with tiny houses and rocking fishing boats, surrounded by rolling hills covered with lush greenery. The Japanese built tunnels and gun posts at the site during World War II, which were later used by the French during the Indochina War, and by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War. The top can be reached by car or scooter, or, if you're feeling fit, by hiking up a steep, narrow slope. Follow the marked paths through a labyrinth of underground tunnels, caves, and narrow passages, then walk the "U-tunnel" and see where the sleeping quarters were. The fort also features a small museum and a cafe with a terrace. Using our custom trip planner, Cat Ba attractions like Cannon Fort can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • We went there on foot. The view is beautiful! No Sun in sight because of the clouds. Provide mosquito repellent and water!

  • The cannon fort is exactly where one can see the bunkers and the cannons from where Vietnam battled against US invasion. The old bunkers and cannons are preserved nicely to allow it to be to be a war ...  more »

  • Beautiful view with some neat relics, it’s all open concept so you can just go up and explore at your own leisure. It costs 40000 dong to visit and you can either walk or motorcycle. There is a small cafe at the top that sells food and drinks at a reasonable price however it is twice as much as it would cost you in town. Worth the visit but be prepared for the heat if you walk as it’s all uphill.
  • Great spot to see the sunset! Remember to be there early, because all the good spots will be occupied. It takes about 40 mins walk from the bottom to the top. There are also many local people would love to give you a bike ride up to the entrance ( I’m not sure about the price tho, just ask few more drivers to make sure) The entrance fee is 50,000D, but looks like after the sunset hour, the gate will be empty and free to get in and out.
  • Most of all you should go here for the nice view! The view receives 5/5 stars. However, the war exhibition could not arouse enthusiasm at all. It feels like nobody put any passion into it. Only 3/5 stars in total.
  • Whilst I'm not really into war sites, I liked the views a lot. Not sure if you get a similar view of the bay and the islands somewhere else, well worth the 40K entrance fee. It can get a bit scary when it gets dark and all staff suddenly disappear (6pm) and you're left alone on your own in the dark dugouts.
  • Great views, nice cafe, exhibits were alright but not great. Entry was 40,000 dong. There's a small interpretive museum, and a few plaques with cursory information, although I don't feel like I really got an understanding of the fort's history. Still, great views of the islands and bay, and a nice cafe. (Avoid the bathrooms, though- no toilet paper, and bucket flush.)
