Cannon Fort, Cat Ba

(340+ reviews on the web)
Landmark
Cannon Fort offers scenic views of a bay with tiny houses and rocking fishing boats, surrounded by rolling hills covered with lush greenery. The Japanese built tunnels and gun posts at the site during World War II, which were later used by the French during the Indochina War, and by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War. The top can be reached by car or scooter, or, if you're feeling fit, by hiking up a steep, narrow slope. Follow the marked paths through a labyrinth of underground tunnels, caves, and narrow passages, then walk the "U-tunnel" and see where the sleeping quarters were. The fort also features a small museum and a cafe with a terrace. Put Cannon Fort into our Cat Ba travel itinerary planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Cat Ba.

  • Just a stunning overview on the bay and the island at sunset! It is 40.000 dong to get in, but that is worth it. It is quite a climb to the top, so you might take a scooter all the way to the top.  more »
  • Easiest way to get an amazing view. Rent scooters, tour the island, for sunset get up here. Little history mixed in. Bring your own beer. Very okay.  more »

  • Interesting to see this hilltop artillery position. Great panorama of the surrounding bays. Before you enter the complex itself, off the road up to it, there are a number of caves each containing mobile artillery. These are locked behind steel gates, and some require a scramble along a jungle path to find. Very sparse information on the history of the site is provided, but enough to understand well enough the purpose it served. You're brave to walk up from the town in the heat of the day - it's deceptively high up. Entrance 40k each.
  • Beautiful sunset view at the artillery marker. Make sure to arrive early enough before to look around the fort which is actually pretty interesting! Definitely a must-do on Cat Ba.
  • Beautiful scenery. Seeing the sunset from there was lovely. Totally recommended.
  • Good cheap place to investigate on a ride out of town for something to do. Not a whole lot to see but interesting. Didnt have a guide and I wouldn't think you would need one. Just interesting to see the cannons, treneches, and a few rooms with old war relics. Worth a stop for the couple of $ it costs to visit. Could spend 30 to 45 mins. Nice view over the bay and can grab a drink in the little resteraunt if you want to sit and admire the view.
  • Nice to walk around the fort and overlook the bay around Cat Ba itself. Can recommend to go with the motorbike to the top, if you got one. Worth the 40.000 dong entry fee, but just for the view. The fort it self is not to much, but still better then the hospital cave.
