Cannon Fort, Cat Ba

4.1
Cannon Fort offers scenic views of a bay with tiny houses and rocking fishing boats, surrounded by rolling hills covered with lush greenery. The Japanese built tunnels and gun posts at the site during World War II, which were later used by the French during the Indochina War, and by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War. The top can be reached by car or scooter, or, if you're feeling fit, by hiking up a steep, narrow slope. Follow the marked paths through a labyrinth of underground tunnels, caves, and narrow passages, then walk the "U-tunnel" and see where the sleeping quarters were. The fort also features a small museum and a cafe with a terrace. Using our custom trip planner, Cat Ba attractions like Cannon Fort can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Quick steep walk out of Cat Ba and a 40k VND entrance fee gives you a 360 deg view of the surrounding area. Quick, easy, and cheap must do in Cat Ba  more »
  • In all seriousness if not bad memories, the construction is recommended. Not much to get lost. A taxi from your hotel or a travel agent to the Hill tremendously as far as further ask them to go by taxi to go unconditionally. Also referred to as the coming thing and nothing

  • Seems to be renovated.... Loud construction in opposite of the street. Breakfast room too small for the amount of guests, one service guide and you need patients and time to get the coffee refilled.  more »

  • Great views of the bay and karsts. The tour circuit is a little hard to follow and there are no explanations anywhere, but you are basically free to explore trenches, bunkers, and cannon areas with no barricades anywhere. It is definitely worth walking the circuit as there are several other viewpoints besides the cafe at the start. It was a nice walk up from town, not as steep as I had imagined from the other reviews. Lots of space to park motorbikes at the top if you choose that method.
  • Compared to the rest of Cat Ba this place is a must see. Quite a bit of a hike, if you are walking. About 15 minutes by bike from downtown. Great views from the top in all directions. The so called museum has almost nothing to show, but the trenches are still there, as are remnants of two anti-ship cannons. Budget approximately an hour to see it all and enjoy the view with a can of beer.
  • Best view in town We walked all the way up from town, not the best idea ever... But was worth it for the views Nice bar up top and a cool little walk around the hill with lots to see. If you are staying in town you really need to get up here! They even have a pig living up top, so that was fun.
  • A definite must see on Cat Ba. Great views from the top. A bit of a hike, so consider getting a ride to the hill. The museum itself is not worth noting, but they have a couple of big cannons and the trenches are still intact.
  • A good place to visit in Cat Ba. Amazing views of the bay and floating villages with some military history. Hiking is possible but very steep slopes. We took a motorcycle and got there in 15 mins. Good place for sunrise if weather permits. There's a cafe at the top to relax and have beer or coffee.
