#1 of 6 in Shopping in Lao Cai Province
A flurry of color and community bursts into life every Sunday at Bac Ha Market. A bustling spectacle of North Vietnamese village culture, the market serves as the weekly meeting place for many ethnic minority groups, including the brightly dressed Flower Hmong, Phi La, and Black Dao peoples. Arrive early for an authentic taste of the market, surrounded by the sounds and smells of chickens, buffalo, and goats being traded amongst the villagers. Try your hand at bartering for some locally made handicrafts, before picking up a bite to eat at one of the many food stalls. • Is a huge and colourful "fair" from country, to which the inhabitants from villages in the region. Yes you would be triggered thousands of photographs and wouldn't be enough, but it is nice and interesting even just plunge into the crowd, perceive odors of food, people, animals, remain astonished and fascinated by the incredible traffic of scooters and cars that miraculously unravels from traffic jams that for us Westerners seem unsolvable. To live definitely in a visit to VietNam

  • After all that we have heard I expected better, but this remains ultra interesting in the morning at 6: 00. Great held flower hmong women. But disbelief in the face of the asking prices, whether in power or in memory prices are sometimes multiplied by 5. And you negotiate you really feel the irritation of the viet even more unpleasant. Extremely little smiles and difficult create contacts... the only smile received came from a local lady with whom I had danced the night before the feast of the village. Then around 8:30 arrive focused.on.inspiring.long incredibly inconsiderate and including tourists compared to photos taken (a lady has failed to take the objective in the nose while she stirred rice) is to see but I think than a market such as that of the Wednesday at 30 km from bac ha must be preserved more...

  • This city that seemed asleep yesterday when we arrived, suddenly woke this Sunday. Since this morning, the streets do not stop to fill, hundreds of villagers from the mountains and valleys around to give appointment every week for there barter their crafts, the fruit of their crops or their animals for breeding. The North of the Viet Nam has 54 different ethnic groups, which differ by their language, their costumes and traditions. The largest ethnic group around Bac Ha are Hmong flowers. Their colorful costumes are a real treat for the eyes and the photographers. The huge market extends throughout the city center. There are 4 large spaces: the food market where there is a lot of meat and fish. Freshly cut animals lie on a plank of wood on the floor. Even if we feel the lack of good rare meat and fish, I'm not our need for protein in these stalls, say that restaurants provide here, sometimes it's better not knowing! In this part, in addition to meat, there are a lot of fruits and exotic vegetables, spices and of course rice of all kinds in profusion. The second part houses the market cattle where breeders come to sell and acquire Buffalo, poultry, black pigs or horses. From our host, a Buffalo sells $ 1,500 which corresponds to 33 million VND. Knowing that the largest denomination is a 500,000 ticket, require a famous WAD to hope to develop a buffalo! The third part with the ethnic products is the nerve center of all visitors in search of authenticity. Here one finds a plethora of fabrics, clothing, bags, and other handicrafts. The shelves are beautiful, very colorful and make us want to buy everything. Awards are given to the client's head, that's why as a European we have to negotiate all the time! The last part of the market includes street food stalls. A few drops of rain will not spoil the pleasure to observe local life. It seems that this is really a great gathering place. Women greet each other, congratulate themselves on their work, laughing heartily clearly happy to cross. Men smoke the bang together, some took the opportunity to cut your hair in the street, children run free as the air while we keep our 4 blondes by hand for fear of losing them in the crowd. I liked me steeped in this atmosphere incredibly exotic. Little trick, sleep to Bac Ha on Saturday night to be at the market early before the flow of tourists who come to Sapa and arrive around 8:30.

  • Bac Ha is a beautiful little town. If you have time and opportunity to drive around with motorbike, the area has lovely rice terraces and mountain view. The people are much nicer then in Sapa! This place is still not spoiled by tourism. And the prices are less. On the market you must negotiate the price. If you walk away you can arrange even third prise. ;) Enjoy the time there!
  • Pretty commercial place. I would highly recommend the other market which is 20km away from Bac Ha and take place every Saturday. Unfortunately I cant remember the name of the place.
  • Worth of visit if you can. With a local guide you can really improve your experience here and understand the dynamics in this market.
  • Nice, colorful market. Attractive, especially on sunday morning, when the market is full of the local minority tribes (and the tourists, too).
  • A great place to people watch. So much variety in food, crafts, clothing... Do yourself a favor and come to Bac Ha a night early so that you can get to the market early, before the swarms of tourists get there.
