Bac Ha Market, Bac Ha

#1 of 6 in Shopping in Lao Cai Province
A flurry of color and community bursts into life every Sunday at Bac Ha Market. A bustling spectacle of North Vietnamese village culture, the market serves as the weekly meeting place for many ethnic minority groups, including the brightly dressed Flower Hmong, Phi La, and Black Dao peoples. Arrive early for an authentic taste of the market, surrounded by the sounds and smells of chickens, buffalo, and goats being traded amongst the villagers. Try your hand at bartering for some locally made handicrafts, before picking up a bite to eat at one of the many food stalls. • We had booked a trip from Sapa, bear in mind that it takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes one way. We left to 7:45 hours (too bad, from me they would be allowed to leave a few hours earlier, so you used to be on the market) and we were there around half past ten. It's a real traditional market, the people from the neighborhood come here on Sunday their shop. They are so not ' dressed ' for the tourists. The market is divided in different parts, clothing, fruit and vegetables, food, chickens and dogs and just across the river is the Buffalo market. It's all very colorful to see, really worth it but it is a short drive.

  • In this world, there are places that if we do not visit them now, we might not have the opportunities to do so in future. We recently embarked on a spectacular 15-day private tour to soak up the astou...  more »
  • Great bath of motley crowd that should not miss. Must listen to, watch, taste and buy in short to participate in the local party.

  • Big Brocade market , big buffalo market and beautiful night market. And you can ride motobike to discover around there. There are many beautiful places with flowers garden and beautiful scenes
  • Same purses, scarves and jewelry as other markets like Sapa, nothing very authentic (very touristy). Not worth 6 hours of riding in a bus to get to. If you go..avoid the meat market at all costs. I happened into it while looking at the colorful vegetables and street food (dead dogs on tables) 😢...walked up a hill to get away from it...came across where they sell puppies ...not sure if as pets or livestock. I love Vietnam and the people but this market is very confronting with the dog meat part of their culture.
  • I actually wasn't so excited about this market. Yes it's colorful and yes is intended to the locals and less for tourists (Plus!), but it looks like other markets in the east. Add to it 3 hours drive per direction, and you get a Meh. So if you've been to a 3rd world market already and you're short on time - you can skip this one.
  • Local market, can try local food with " thắng cố, xôi ngũ sắc, rượu ngô " , special market just only Sunday, the palce can go when you stay Sapa, can go by tourism for 1 day or you can go by bus 3 hours and stay 1 night on Saturday with night market
  • Very interesting, exited, and a lot of thing therre, colourfull
