La Basílica Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Socorro1 o la Catedral de Valencia2 constituye el recinto religioso más importante y uno de los puntos turísticos de mayor interés en la ciudad de Valencia, ... read more »The Basilica Cathedral of our Lady of the Socorro1 or Valencia2 Cathedral is the most important religious site and one of the sights of interest in the city of Valencia, Venezuela. Considered a national historic landmark, it is the official headquarters for the veneration of the Virgin of Socorro, so it receives annually thousands of parishioners who attend to pay tribute to the patron saint of Valencia with devotion. In the beginning, the temple that we know today was considered parish church, then in 1921 with the creation of the Diocese of the city of Valencia, then became a Cathedral Church. Later, with Adam Bishop in charge of the diocese, the Cathedral received the title of minor Basilica granted by Papa Juan XXIII, because of great artistic value that has the shrine and especially for being the place where lies the image of the Virgen del Socorro, whose canonical Coronation was held in 1910, and whose faith and devotion is followed by thousands of faithful. The building, located in the avenida Urdaneta with Colombia Street, just in front of the Plaza Bolivar, was initiated in 1580, but it was not but at the end of the 18TH century and until the beginning of the 19TH when buildings of the Cathedral managed to finish, due to the wars of independence, taking the form that retains today. Main building clearly reveals the architectural influence of the colonial era, in its interior are side chapels whose buildings lie around 1890, and including, the passion, the chapel of St. Joseph Chapel, the chapel of the Virgen del Socorro with its beautiful altar, among others.show original
