Cathedral of Mérida, Merida

4.7
Built in a grand Spanish colonial style, Cathedral of Mérida stands out as an architectural highlight Merida, and a center of the area's spiritual life. Construction began on the cathedral in 1803, though its erection was greatly delayed by earthquakes, the War of Independence, and various political issues. Today it stands as an icon of the town's character, displaying its history proudly through the exhibits located inside. Find impressive works of art lining the interior walls, including paintings and sculptures, then head down to the crypt, the final resting place of some of the town's most important religious figures. • With 400 years of history, the Cathedral minor basilica of Mérida "Inmaculada Concepción" is one of the most visited by the vacationers. ... Taking into account its historical significance, this Cathedral was elevated to basilica minor in 1991 by Pope Juan Pablo II. Be sure to visit it.
