Castillo San Carlos de Borromeo, Margarita Island
Categories: Landmarks, Tourist Spots
The restored remains of Castillo San Carlos de Borromeo, a colonial-era fortress, now house an eclectic art/history museum. Built in the 17th century to protect Spanish colonists from Dutch pirates, the fort was ransacked several times throughout history. Restored in the 1960s, the fortress now features several exhibit areas, housing paintings depicting the War of Independence, antique weapons, and the replica of Santa Maria, one of the boats belonging to Christopher Columbus.
