Mount Yasur, Tanna Island
(4.8/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
Marvel at the awe-inspiring beauty of Mount Yasur, an active volcano on Tanna Island that has been erupting continuously for 800 years. Mild eruptions still occur several times an hour. Despite its activity, visitors can approach this attraction safely according to strict government guidelines. Consider visiting late in the day so you can view the eruptions during both daylight and nighttime. Access involves a bumpy ride on rough roads and a short hike to the viewing point. When you go, keep in mind Captain James Cook himself was once drawn to the island by the volcano's glowing light and tried to climb the attraction before villagers stopped him, saying the volcano was sacred. • First surprise: the exorbitant price of 7500 SEEN to go up once to the volcano (4500 SEEN for the second visit), without any alternative; unpleasant feeling of being taken hostage by a commercial machinery at the antipodes of Vanuatu culture. This amount is "justified" by the package including a guide and customary dances... Talk to! Actually guide, explained once Summit were more than summaries, I had the impression to be monitored in my travels that guided and informed. But worst of all was the traditional dances that looked more like a show for tourists to a customary dance with a soul, vibrant and sincere as I had the chance to see previously elsewhere in Vanuatu. In my opinion tourists choosing to come to discover this country aren't looking especially tourism of mass, but on the contrary a tourism off the beaten path to meet the people and their traditions. The volcano is magnificent, majestic, dignified, to the image of the Ni-Vanuatu but what is proposed (imposed) by the organiser must completely distorts what makes the wealth of the country: his soul, its authenticity, its deep cultural footprint, its customs, respect for the men and their union with nature. In summary the Mt Yasur, the night especially, is grandiose, unforgettable experience! Want just the operating company Entani is driven out of monopoly and the neighboring tribes to find the customary right to visit this magical place by sharing their knowledge of the volcano and their unwavering smile. A return to authenticity will be the only guarantee of continuity for this beautiful country. Additional Tip: for a beautiful view of the volcano, a great location: the tree lodge + 678 5645081 Jackson

  • A humbling experience to be this close to mother nature. Unlike anything else. Try the dawn tour for something a bit different.
  • This is definitely worth going to, though the cost is very high. Don't miss the opportunity to be there at nighttime (when dark), which the tour leaving for the sunset will do for you. It is only when...  more »
