Port Vila Markets, Port Vila

4.1
#1 of 6 in Shopping in Vanuatu
Find ingredients for dinner at Port Vila Markets, a market with stalls run by local women from around the island. Hosted in an open-walled building, each stall is filled with quality fruit and vegetables like oranges, beans, peanuts, bananas, eggplant, and other local items you may not be familiar with. If you visit during the summer, do not miss the seasonal sweet raspberries. Keep in mind bargaining is not acceptable and is even considered rude. • The specialty here is fruit and veg. We were here in January. So many types of banana/plantains, pineapples, mangoes, root veges (kumala, yam etc). There is also a small food area where you can buy heaped plates of rice, veg and hot meats like braised beef ribs, fish, etc. really tasty and about $au6. Sometimes, early, you can get fish but not much and not for long!
  • Market is the best place to decorate your menus. Be cautious to check for cheap prices. Otherwise parking is next to the market. Don't forget to a taste of beautiful Vanuatu freah coconut juice.
  • Cheap fresh produce, and supporting local villages. Easy access by bus, also parking on site and located in main town. Plenty of competition so be sure to shop around and don't be afraid to barter if you feel you can get a better deal. Locals can be quick to charge foreigners high prices, even though you may think the price is fair it is not so great when you find you were charged double the 'local' price. Be vigilant but mostly be polite and friendly, these people are wonderful.
  • A cultural experience of a lifetime. The food is westerner friendly (just in case you weren't keen on passing half your bodyweight in transit).
  • Plenty Local product from the farmers, good for your delicious dishes for your menu at home & restaurants.

Where to stay in Port Vila

As Efate's largest town and the hub of tourist activity, Port Vila offers solid lodging options catering to foreign visitors. Consider staying in an upscale hotel or chain resort along the shores of Vila Bay for easy access to beaches and central attractions. Many hotels and guesthouses allow children under 12 to stay free of charge, and checking for this ahead of time can help you score extremely economical accommodations. You can also look for affordable rooms a bit out of town, at inland guesthouses or low-key resorts. If you do choose to go that far, consider renting a car.
