Matevulu Blue Hole, Espiritu Santo

Water Body Nature / Park
Accessed by dirt road or kayak, Matevulu Blue Hole represents a stunning pool of crystal-clear spring water. In fact, the water is so clear that it almost seems like you are flying instead of swimming. Next to the blue hole, a grand Banyan tree outstretches and holds a bamboo ladder and rope swing, so visitors can fly through the air and take an exciting leap into the blue water below. The locals charge a small fee to enter the attraction; remember that trying to bargain is considered rude. Make Matevulu Blue Hole a centerpiece of your Espiritu Santo vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Espiritu Santo itinerary builder.

Where to stay in Espiritu Santo

You'll find most of Espiritu Santo's accommodations clustered in the southeastern corner of the island, where the city of Luganville offers everything from basic beach houses and bungalows, to boutique hotels and upscale resorts. Luganville's city center boasts many hotels within walking distance of most local attractions and beaches, with quieter guesthouses an easy jaunt inland by car. Head up the eastern coast of the island to find beach lodges and sizeable resorts strung out along the shores of the Coral Sea. Due to the island's mountainous and forested interior, most areas away from the coast offer little other than family-run guesthouses and basic hotels, though these often offer budget-friendly deals.

  • We stopped there on a day trip up the East Coast from Luganville. The driver had warned us that due to the recent rains that maybe Matevulu would be muddy. He was right. We left and went to Nanda blue...  more »
  • A little way out of Luganville, the Matevulu blue is an amazing spot! My daughter and I kayaked from the blue hole to Oyster Island and it was so serene and beautiful along the river. Awesome day trip...  more »

  • Great destination while you are in Santo Take insect spray and some courage to use the ropes to swing into the amazing water
  • Entry cost 500vt (AU$5). A popular tourist spot and a fabulous place to relax and take a swim in the clear cool water. Water life included fish & a sea snake. Climb the large banyan tree with rope swing or hire a kayak. Recommend wearing reef shoes, rocks in and around the water are sharp under feet. There is a toilet block and is free to use.
  • Clear deep fresh water. Multiple rope swings. 500vt pp.
  • Best Blue Hole in Santo, natural, clear and easy to get to in a traditional dug out paddled by a local for approx 1000vatu per person. Or walk in 15 mins from the main road. We had him paddle us back down the river to the mouth of the bay and across to Oyster Island afterwards for a great lunch at the resort there for an extra 1000vatu total. Oyster island resort is very friendly they took us out snorkeling on a private trip(3000vatu) with a guide and driver/captain for 3 hrs. The highlight was Turtle island- the best deep water snorkeling was did on out 10 day trip.
