#1 of 18 in Things to do in Khiva
Marvel at Khiva's medieval walled city, Itchan Kala--a World Heritage-listed open-air museum. Spanning 26 hectares (64 acres), this well-preserved urban core features over 250 old houses and more than 50 tourist attractions within its 2 km (1.2 mi) long brick wall. Some 300 families still live inside the walls, specializing in traditional crafts. Take a stroll along the old alleys, do some museum-hopping, and admire an ornate tiled minaret and characteristic entrance towers over a pointed arch. Climb to a vantage point for a panoramic view of Khiva. To visit Itchan Kala on your holiday in Khiva, and find out what else Khiva has to offer, use our Khiva trip website .

  • I advise you to see not only the tourism sector of ichan-Qala, but mahalju, which occupies approximately half of this attraction. In the tourist part of it will be interesting to dive into the world of the history of Khiva, which was restored and adapted for tourist walks. And here is the modern world of Khiva, you can see if you delve into mahalju. Everything is different: no paved streets, old Adobe House, animal right on streets, water from the 1950s 20 century, and more, giving the connection istorichekogo to feel the atmosphere of the past and the present in lives of ordinary hivincev. Get lost, fear not: dimensions of ichan Qala is such that after 5-10 minutes you still go out to the walls of ichan-Qala and get along them either before, or to the tourist part.

  • A wonderful site to visit in February. Bright sun, cold temperature and some local brides to see. In March, probably not so pleasant with bunch of tourists.
  • There are a lot of museums inside Itchan-Kala, where you just need to buy a ticket from the West gate and you will be able to visit all the museum inside, except minaret and one of the tall wall. The ticket lasts for 2 days. Viewing the city from higher point during sunset is really spectacular.
  • Amazing place. The city is rather small and can be walked easily. In summer the better times are the morning, when the air is fresh and the sunset when the sun light is good for.pictures and may stalls are closed. Have also a walk near the walls where most f the people live, they are very friendly. Some nice artisan shops too with good prices.
  • Old town inner city of Khiva, really blown my mind
  • Amazing inner wall of old Khiva. You can walk on part of it. When we did this, we were the only people on the wall. It is free
