Friday Mosque, Khiva

4.2
#2 of 13 in Things to do in Khiva
Admire archaic Islamic architecture at Friday Mosque, a cathedral mosque and part of the World Heritage-protected walled inner town of Khiva. This 18th-century single-hall mosque features a flat roof supported by over 200 carved wooden pillars--a few of which date back to the original 10th-century building and bear ancient Arabic inscriptions in Kufic. Floral-vegetable patterns adorn some of the newer 18th-century columns, complemented by lavish decoration and delicate door carvings. With its 52 m (171 ft) baked-brick minaret intermittently rounded by turquoise tile belts, the mosque remains a landmark of the old city. • The Friday Mosque is just one of many buildings that gives its unique charm of the medieval city Chitwa. It runs through the car-free city as in a dream and feels transported back centuries. A monument joins the other and it does not come out from the amazement. The people of the city are absolutely open and they love it to be photographed with the foreign tourists. We have seen not once Islamic headscarves, and begged we were never for lots of laughter and even a spontaneous dance of market women. A real highlight in Uzbekistan, which certainly is equivalent in its entirety with Bukhara and Samarkand.

  • This hypostyle mosque has many historic features although there is also considerable reconstruction. Its numerous carved wood columns, characteristic of Khiva style, date from many periods. Some of the oldest. columns, each carved from a single log, bear early Arabic inscriptions and designs reflective of Sogdian and pre-Islamic Sasanian heritage. This is a very beautiful space and a good place to escape the heat mid-day, for contemplation, regaining strength, writing notes, experiencing history, etc. NOTE: there seems to be some confusion between Juma Mosque and Djuma Mosque. This review is of the old Friday Mosque in Khiva.
  • Impressive. Don't miss it.
