Great Minaret of the Kalon, Bukhara

(4.9/5 based on 280+ reviews on the web)
Marvel at the mastery of ancient bricklayers at Great Minaret of the Kalon, which dominates the landscape of Bukhara. Built in 1127 by Aslan Khan as a part of Po-i-Kalyan mosque, the carved, baked brick minaret stands 47 m (154 ft) and features 14 ornamental bands, the first use of glazed blue tiles now characteristic of the region. Once the tallest building in Central Asia, this giant mace-looking tower includes an observation deck--a rotunda with 16 carved arched fenestrations and a former execution site--for a great panorama of Bukhara. Using our international travel planner, Bukhara attractions like Great Minaret of the Kalon can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • We are in search of another great culture, Persian culture and the Greek with Alexander the great, we are also on the Silk Road with all the influences that could bring merchants and travellers. We also discover the brand of the religion of Zoroaster on islam and the similarities abound. The journey of the thousand and one nights

  • Among the rare works of man passed free of the destructive fury of Genghis Khan, this minaret represents perhaps the most impressive and it's really hard to try to imagine how impressive must have seemed a thousand years ago. In addition the surrounding theater is breathtaking, especially when the low sun plays with the chiaroscuro of the decorations.

  • Snowy Bukhara, is very rare, usually in these parts if it is snowing, it costs no more than a couple of days, then it all turns into slush.
