Marvel at the mastery of ancient bricklayers at Great Minaret of the Kalon, which dominates the landscape of Bukhara. Built in 1127 by Aslan Khan as a part of Po-i-Kalyan mosque, the carved, baked brick minaret stands 47 m (154 ft) and features 14 ornamental bands, the first use of glazed blue tiles now characteristic of the region. Once the tallest building in Central Asia, this giant mace-looking tower includes an observation deck--a rotunda with 16 carved arched fenestrations and a former execution site--for a great panorama of Bukhara.
