Landmark
Encircled by busy roads and countless important buildings, Plaza Independencia acts as the nerve center of Montevideo. The square's centerpiece, a 30-ton bronze statue of Jose Artigas, the national hero who helped Uruguay achieve its independence, stands proudly in the middle of the expansive public space. Go below the statue to visit a mausoleum holding the revolutionary leader's remains. • The town's main square and surrounded by important buildings and historical monuments visiting this Plaza is central to all who visit Montevideo.

  • This area is mesmerizing. The old buildings alongside newer apartments (70's) surrounding the square captivate from the moment you enter. The statues are amazingly detailed. It's a photographers parad...  more »
  • Is a typical city center. Square with ancient monuments and good for facts. There is no special attraction. Rebound the sense of security, not common in similar sites in Brazil.

  • Green and well maintained! Visit the Artigas mausoleum under the statue. This square was designed in the 1830s by Carlo Zucchi, inspired in the Rue de Rivoli, Paris
  • As close as it gets for the national mall of Uruguay. The plaza is well maintained and you'll see plenty of Uruguanos hanging around drinking their mate. The mausoleum is worth checking out but it will only take a moment or two of your time.
  • Nice place to go for fresh air
  • It's a beautiful place. It's worth visiting the museum located underneath the statue.
  • While a nice square during the daytime, perhaps not the best place to hang out, especially while alone, during the evening hours as the lighting of it could be improved.
