Plaza Independencia, Montevideo

4.4
#2 of 201 in Things to do in Montevideo
Landmark Tourist Spot
Encircled by busy roads and countless important buildings, Plaza Independencia acts as the nerve center of Montevideo. The square's centerpiece, a 30-ton bronze statue of Jose Artigas, the national hero who helped Uruguay achieve its independence, stands proudly in the middle of the expansive public space. Go below the statue to visit a mausoleum holding the revolutionary leader's remains. Where to stay in Montevideo

Montevideo's central neighborhoods offer plenty of hostels for budget-minded travelers, as well as a good selection of mid-range hotels for visitors looking for a bit more space and privacy. Luxury rooms are harder to come by, especially if you arrive without a reservation. If you want to indulge your every desire, your best bet is the waterfront area, where you can find four- and five-star hotels offering all the modern amenities you need, including complimentary bicycles and car rental services.

  • We were on a 1 day tour from Buenos Aires and had a short stop to wander around the square. I wish we had more time as it was a Sunday and lots of locals, vendors and entertainers.  more »
  • Rectangular area which contains a lot of history and also some beautiful architecture. A good meeting spot and a good photo spot.  more »

  • Nice place to take pictures and make a stop to eat some snacks. Oh, don't go on a very windy day!
  • Beautiful Plaza with impressive statue of Jose Artigas in the center. His mausoleum is housed underground. It is one of the most important plazas of the city. Honor Guard stands watch over the mausoleum. Flanked on one side by the Teatro Solis, the city's main theater. A must visit.
  • On main square. Walking to and through Old Town. Definitely 50's style. Has a casino. My bathroom was a little dated. Buffet breakfast standard.
  • Interesting for history and culture. Good place to start a walk in the old city
  • If you roam around this place, you will realise it as an European country.
