Plaza Independencia, Montevideo

(4.3/5 based on 5,500+ reviews on the web)
Encircled by busy roads and countless important buildings, Plaza Independencia acts as the nerve center of Montevideo. The square's centerpiece, a 30-ton bronze statue of Jose Artigas, the national hero who helped Uruguay achieve its independence, stands proudly in the middle of the expansive public space. Go below the statue to visit a mausoleum holding the revolutionary leader's remains. • In the square we have a 360° view of the center of Montevideo. Place clean, organized and history. During the weekends, the Center is pretty empty. Closed trade and movement of people.

  • Square in the heart of Montevideo, on the edge of the ' old town ' with the city centre. Is a very large square, with beautiful landscaping and the statue in honor of Jose Artigas. In the center of the square, below the statue, is the mausoleum with the remains of this national hero.

  • Green and well maintained! Visit the Artigas mausoleum under the statue. This square was designed in the 1830s by Carlo Zucchi, inspired in the Rue de Rivoli, Paris
  • As close as it gets for the national mall of Uruguay. The plaza is well maintained and you'll see plenty of Uruguanos hanging around drinking their mate. The mausoleum is worth checking out but it will only take a moment or two of your time.
  • Nice place to go for fresh air
  • It's a beautiful place. It's worth visiting the museum located underneath the statue.
  • While a nice square during the daytime, perhaps not the best place to hang out, especially while alone, during the evening hours as the lighting of it could be improved.
