Pittamiglio"s Castle, Montevideo

4.1
#3 of 18 in Historic Sites in Montevideo
Admire an impressive Modernist landmark, cultural center, and museum at Pittamiglio"s Castle, home of architect Humberto Pittamiglio from 1910 until his death in 1966. The building's design was an ongoing process intentionally left unfinished when Pittamiglio died. Consider the symbolism of the curious sculptures curling around the main building, and take a tour of the interior to see oddly shaped rooms, doors that lead to nothing, and interesting color and material choices. The life of the architect remains the source of much mystery, and the museum addresses several rumors that surround the man and his work. Put Pittamiglio"s Castle and other Montevideo attractions into our Montevideo day trip website , and watch your holiday take shape.

  • From the beginning, with the façade, you realize that inside has to be very curious. The Guide explained everything very well and to detail, walk through the House very interesting, and the magic of the fun end show

  • This was part of a tour of the city and it was an interesting part of the city's history. The house design both interior and exterior are worth seeing. At the end we were treated to watching a couple ...  more »
  • Ali on Rambla, next door to Playa Pocitos, is this "little castle" with unusual forms. It's quite beautiful and draws attention, certainly deserves a passed to be admired and to a photo. There is nothing in it except your attraction even facade. But don't let go be amazed with the architecture. For more information about tours in Uruguay visit: my Muse blog

  • A very strange man designed this house. The tour was bit much all around. A lot of it seemed pretty made up, like someone wrote their Art History masters thesis about this place. Seems like the folly of a rich family's self-styled architect. Make sure to come on December 21, though, so you can see the magic letter T on the floor of one of the rooms...
  • This is an amazing place to visit, in front of the river with an incredible story. There is a guide visit at 5 pm. The price is $150Uruguayan pesos. The bad thing is that they don't speak English just Spanish.
  • Perfect place for whom likes history e and magic air.
  • Beautiful museum, not to miss when in Montevideo! Watch out for the hours of the guided visits.
  • Amazing place full of symbols and diagrams. Short guided tours after 17:00 are very recommended.

Where to stay in Montevideo

Montevideo's central neighborhoods offer plenty of hostels for budget-minded travelers, as well as a good selection of mid-range hotels for visitors looking for a bit more space and privacy. Luxury rooms are harder to come by, especially if you arrive without a reservation. If you want to indulge your every desire, your best bet is the waterfront area, where you can find four- and five-star hotels offering all the modern amenities you need, including complimentary bicycles and car rental services.
