Where to stay in Montevideo

Montevideo's central neighborhoods offer plenty of hostels for budget-minded travelers, as well as a good selection of mid-range hotels for visitors looking for a bit more space and privacy. Luxury rooms are harder to come by, especially if you arrive without a reservation. If you want to indulge your every desire, your best bet is the waterfront area, where you can find four- and five-star hotels offering all the modern amenities you need, including complimentary bicycles and car rental services.

  • This fortress sits on a high mount and has great historical facts about the independence of Uruguay. Expect to find swords, canons, firearms and the clothes used by the soldiers who gave their lives to defend their country. Huge frames depict with great details the chilling horrors of the wars that the country endured since it's independence. The neighborhood looks a bit intimidating by the way. It's a must see.
  • The best view of Montevideo. The suburb around it is somewhat scary and has a very bad reputation for public safety. If it didn't, it would be the most expensive area of the city due to its setting and architecture.
  • Good tourist place with a great view
