Fortaleza del Cerro, Montevideo

4.1
Built to protect a lighthouse from British invasion, Fortaleza del Cerro stands proudly over the city, offering a fantastic view. The fortress, built in 1839, sit at the top of Cerro de Montevideo, some 439 ft (134 m) above sea level. Today, the historic building houses a military museum, home to a collection of firearms. The lighthouse protected by this fortress continues to operate and runs regular tours. The area around the fortress is a little bit rough, so stick to main roads or opt for a taxi to get here. • Location away from the city, but on one condition only. There is no other Hill in Montevideo that give opportunity to see the whole city from the top. Disturbing quantity d seemed to place police on the way, but by car you arrive without concern. Worth visiting.

  • The namesake town is unfortunately just outside can be achieved very quickly with the taxi. A walk is not recommended here because the area is run down something. The views of the city and the surrounding area is fantastic. The Museum was unfortunately closed.

  • Even having gone several times to Montevideo, I had never visited the site. Surely the best view in town, besides having a beautiful Museum and a large collection of historic weapons. Even being a little off-route is worth the visit. Value of the input is about R $4.00.

  • This fortress sits on a high mount and has great historical facts about the independence of Uruguay. Expect to find swords, canons, firearms and the clothes used by the soldiers who gave their lives to defend their country. Huge frames depict with great details the chilling horrors of the wars that the country endured since it's independence. The neighborhood looks a bit intimidating by the way. It's a must see.
  • The best view of Montevideo. The suburb around it is somewhat scary and has a very bad reputation for public safety. If it didn't, it would be the most expensive area of the city due to its setting and architecture.
  • Good tourist place with a great view
  • Fantastic place! Gorgeous view of the city!!
  • Cute historic place of Montevideo. The fortress is very neat. It is recommended to spend some time with a good view of the city.

Where to stay in Montevideo

Montevideo's central neighborhoods offer plenty of hostels for budget-minded travelers, as well as a good selection of mid-range hotels for visitors looking for a bit more space and privacy. Luxury rooms are harder to come by, especially if you arrive without a reservation. If you want to indulge your every desire, your best bet is the waterfront area, where you can find four- and five-star hotels offering all the modern amenities you need, including complimentary bicycles and car rental services.
