Catedral Matriz, Montevideo
(4.3/5 based on 2,000+ reviews on the web)
The main Roman Catholic church in Montevideo, Catedral Matriz is an ornate, European-style building in the heart of the city. A vestige of Spanish colonialism, a brick version of the cathedral was constructed in 1740, with the current Neoclassical structure replacing it soon after in 1790. A plain exterior hides the elegant interior of gold and marble. Inside you'll also find tombs of notable Uruguayan figures, as well as those who fought during the British invasion. • The Cathedral is quite large and has several side altars for holding masses with less presence of believers. Inside it there are several graves of priests, Cardinals and even members of the army. Admission is free and if you want to light a candle for the deceased it costs 10 pesos.

  • Very pretty, beautiful images, Cathedral sagras and sacred. A lot of marble and stone, construction to last a lifetime. I went twice to take pictures.

  • The Metropolitan Cathedral is beautiful and big; The altar is well worked, but my visit there was swift. Long enough just to take a look, pray and feel the peace of the environment, in the time that I went to meet her was almost empty. (early afternoon).
