Ex Frigorífico Anglo, Fray Bentos

4.5
#2 of 6 in Things to do in Fray Bentos
Step back in time to the World Heritage-listed Fray Bentos factory, which now houses Ex Frigorífico Anglo. The factory first opened in 1873 and produced canned corned beef for the new brand. Revolutionary in its production of meat sourcing, processing, packing, and dispatching, the factory put the sleepy town on the map for its role as the "world's kitchen," providing food to soldiers during World War I. A guided tour will lead you through the entire production process of the preserved factory. It is very interesting, but little content: I hope to add more things: recreation of the offices of the ANGLO is what I liked most

Very good place. Excellent guided visits. And especially remarkable willingness of officials and their commitment. It would be good to continue the effort to recover what still remains to fix.

Visit a place that was considered a world heritage site by UNESCO due to importance in the process of manufacture of meat and derivatives with an importance for supplying troops in World War II with brined meat. When visiting the Barrio Anglio, which arose around the Fridge Fray Bentos Anglo, one can realize the importance that a major company has for the growth of an entire city.

Historical place that you can not miss. It summarizes various aspects of the Uruguay that was. There is still much to restore! There are places that should be 50 years abandoned...

Excellent place, very interesting and well preserved heritage. What I didn't like is that if not paid the tour do not have access to various venues. Not this good.

Where to stay in Fray Bentos

Traditionally an industrial center rather than a touristic one, Fray Bentos has a limited range of accommodations. Head to the water's edge and you'll find a couple of nice hotels; move farther back from it and you'll stumble across a few simple guesthouses. This will no doubt change in coming years, with the listing of the old industrial factory as a World Heritage Site. Until then, consider looking in the neighboring towns of Las Canas and Mercedes for a wider selection of lodgings.
