Puerta de la Ciudadela, Colonia del Sacramento
(4.5/5 based on 1,700+ reviews on the web)
Walk through the only part of the city walls of Montevideo to remain standing at Puerta de la Ciudadela. Once part of the citadel that stood here until 1829 (when, upon Uruguay's independence, it was torn down to make way for the new city), the gate serves as a marker of the city's history and an entrance to the old town. Its attraction has little to do with the architecture, but rather with the history and culture behind it. Once you pass through, you will be in the old part of town, where you can walk the historical streets, peruse local goods, and try the cuisine. • Beautiful location, well preserved, with many activities in the surrounding areas. Trade, squares, Lighthouse, convent, calle de los sighs, cafes, restaurants, beach, declared world heritage-this place is a must!

  • It's wonderful to be in this place. But very hard to make a cool photo. Is a return to the past. It is worth spending a little time on it appreciating every detail.

  • Very interesting history, passing out there come all the memories of what happened at the head. Steps the plate is where Colonia del Sacramento was named by the UNESCO World Heritage. For lunch there just may ask for the Restaurant La Florida where its colonial style accompanies this story.
