Puerta de la Ciudadela, Colonia del Sacramento

4.5/5 based on 1,600+ reviews on the web
Walk through the only part of the city walls of Montevideo to remain standing at Puerta de la Ciudadela. Once part of the citadel that stood here until 1829 (when, upon Uruguay's independence, it was torn down to make way for the new city), the gate serves as a marker of the city's history and an entrance to the old town. Its attraction has little to do with the architecture, but rather with the history and culture behind it. Once you pass through, you will be in the old part of town, where you can walk the historical streets, peruse local goods, and try the cuisine. • (entrance portico). Milestone, dividing the historical sector of the new part of the city. Scrambling over the stone walls, the panoramic view is beautiful, amazing photos. Part of the historic heritage listed by Unesco in 1995, as a world heritage site. Is in one of the entries in the historic district. Walk the whole Ciudad Vieja walk. In the 18th century, the Portuguese surrounded the old city with a wall and a moat (as were forts), with a single entrance gate decorated with the Portuguese coat of arms. In the mid-19th century the Uruguayan President Gabriel Pereira sent to blast the rock wall and the Puerta de la Ciudadela, having the stones of the wall was used to cover the gap. The current gate was restored between 1968 and 1971, when the excavations made for research purposes. Remain preserved the remains of the ancient wall. Place with great empathy, charming, pleasant, quiet.

  • One of the landmarks in the history of Colonia del Sacramento. Very interesting past him, read the history of the site, while visiting the historic district of the city.
