Step back into a bygone era at Museo Ferroviario de Piriápolis, a museum dedicated to Uruguay's railroad heritage. Set on board carriages from the 19th and early 20th centuries, the museum displays artifacts as they would appear on a functioning train, recreating the experience of rail travel in days gone by. Take a walk through the carriages, which have been restored to maintain their charm and character, to the on-site restaurant, which has been designed to replicate an authentic buffet carriage. Where to stay in Colonia del Sacramento

In contrast to its quaint historical architecture, Colonia del Sacramento offers a range of multi-story, luxury accommodations. Most of these sit near the tip of the city's peninsula, with swimming pools and good beach access. If you want to stay in the old town itself, choose between a range of hostels, inns, and boutique hotels housed in buildings more in keeping with the city's colonial architecture. Make sure to reserve your accommodations in advance, especially if visiting on a weekend or during the busy summer season.
