Convento de San Francisco, Colonia del Sacramento

(3.6/5 based on 150+ reviews on the web)
The remains of a colonial-era convent, Convento de San Francisco features stone walls dating back to the 17th century. Originally dedicated to St. Francis Xavier, Spanish missionary and co-founder of the Society of Jesus, the convent was destroyed by fire in the 18th century. Wander the grounds to get a feel for what the building looked like before its destruction, or ascend the steps of a 19th-century, 34 m (111 ft) lighthouse for a panoramic view of Colonia. • The lighthouse, which has 27 metres and 118 steps, was built on the ruins of the convent of Saint Francis Xavier and opened in 1857. It is located in the Plaza Mayor. Operation: every day (closed during lunch, between 12:45 and 14:30) value: 25 Uruguayan pesos for people (2.77 dollars) Tip: only children over 8 years old can climb, and accompanied by the parents. The stairs are narrow and winding, so you better not be wearing a skirt or dress. Do you often have to queue up.
