Convento de San Francisco, Colonia del Sacramento

3.1
#8 of 9 in Historic Sites in Colonia del Sacramento
The remains of a colonial-era convent, Convento de San Francisco features stone walls dating back to the 17th century. Originally dedicated to St. Francis Xavier, Spanish missionary and co-founder of the Society of Jesus, the convent was destroyed by fire in the 18th century. Wander the grounds to get a feel for what the building looked like before its destruction, or ascend the steps of a 19th-century, 34 m (111 ft) lighthouse for a panoramic view of Colonia. • Colonia del Sacramento has many interesting stories and each block in the historic centre is a surprise. And in the convent of San Francisco is no different. Worth the visit Yes and thank the opportunity to be living this experience.

  • It is a landmark that could be best preserved, or rather, protected from people moving all the time, every day, right through that were once the foundation walls of the convent of San Francisco. Only when you are at the top of the nearby Lighthouse is that you know the exact size of the structure. Is clearly the "floorplan" of construction you've been there a day. Imposing on a few points closer to the lighthouse, in others are almost disappearing, in the midst of grass and the passage of people.

  • Might wanna have a guide and tell you about the whole history of Colonia. Nice church near the coast. Not as fancy as churches in chile or Argentina but still nice  more »

Where to stay in Colonia del Sacramento

In contrast to its quaint historical architecture, Colonia del Sacramento offers a range of multi-story, luxury accommodations. Most of these sit near the tip of the city's peninsula, with swimming pools and good beach access. If you want to stay in the old town itself, choose between a range of hostels, inns, and boutique hotels housed in buildings more in keeping with the city's colonial architecture. Make sure to reserve your accommodations in advance, especially if visiting on a weekend or during the busy summer season.
