Basilica De Santisimo Sacramento, Colonia del Sacramento

(4.1/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
One of the highlights of the World Heritage-listed city center, Basilica De Santisimo Sacramento dates back to the 17th century, when the site was occupied by a more humble building made of mud. The pair of main towers possesses colonial-era rusticity, with the whitewashed walls adding much to this effect. The history of the church is detailed in the main building, while the neatly restored interior creates an atmosphere of contemplation and spirituality, harking back to the town's colonial past. • A sophisticated and simple Church as it should be on the inside. A place of worship, and so does not require sophistication. So much so that at the entrance, a sign says something like this: "Although the Basilica has been converted into a tourist spot, is still a Catholic Church. So respect! " (excuse my poor translation from Spanish into Portuguese). Even if in your simplicity, by the historical value the Basilica Del Santissimo Sacramento was declared a world heritage site by Unesco. The visit is permitted and free of charge if you respect the warning.

  • A church very simple despite his seniority. It has a permanent Manger entering on the left.

  • Simple. More interesting on the outside than on the inside. When I went to had a very interesting crib in a room annex. While there, worth visiting.

  • Wonderful church in this former Portuguese colonial town of Colonia del Sacramento. Worth the first visit.
  • Tiny and pretty cathedral with great history
  • excellent place. so much to learn.
  • A small but beautiful church in the middle of the Colonial town. You can visit inside for free.
  • Although it is not a Cathedral (the seat of the diosesis is in Mercedes) is one of the oldest churches of the Uruguay. It is small, built in stone. It contains some very beautiful religious images.
