Barrio Historico, Colonia del Sacramento
(4.8/5 based on 5,500+ reviews on the web)
Explore one of Uruguay's most important historical areas with a visit to Barrio Historico. First established in 1680, and subsequently a point of dispute between Portuguese and Spanish forces for over a century, the old city of Colonia del Sacramento, which sits on the tip of a peninsula, was sought after for its strategic location. Even now, the historic neighborhood retains the essence of its roots, with the ruins of a Portuguese fortress amid charming, crumbling houses. Walk through the neighborhood's sprawling cobbled streets and feel the different cultural influences that have shaped it over the centuries. Put Barrio Historico on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Colonia del Sacramento trip itinerary maker.

  • Tour the historic district is what I liked most about Cologne! Cobbled streets, buildings that are still preserved, the colors of the houses, the Santa Ritas on all sidewalks... especially at sunset, see the fall of the Sun on the Río de La Plata, is adorable! Cologne and its historic centre is a place of which falling in love!

  • Is like back in the history. All the buildings are preserved with their original forms. It is a real journey in time. To go in sneakers or comfortable shoes. The streets and sidewalks are cobbled pointing so impossible to go in high heels!
