Puente Giratorio, Carmelo

(170 reviews on the web)
Landmark Tourist Spot
Visit Puente Giratorio, a picturesque moving swing bridge and an iconic part of Carmelo's image and history. The bridge features on most local postcards, and became synonymous with the city after its construction in early 20th century. The first of its kind in Uruguay, it also represents the first bridge operated entirely by humans when it needs to move. Hang around on the picturesque waterfront and you might get the chance to watch a ship pass under the bridge, causing a whole raft of movements to take place, with part of the bridge appearing to retreat into itself to allow the boat through. Plan to visit Puente Giratorio during your Carmelo vacation using our convenient Carmelo tour planner.

  • First bridge moved in Uruguay human-powered and only in South America. He directed its construction engineer John T. Smith, being enabled for public use since January 15, 1912. On the versa an ancient legend: "anyone who crosses you back... always returns."

  • It is a swivel and old bridge that runs to handle with two people and despite the years still can cross on foot or in vehicle
