Zion's Main Canyon, Zion National Park

4.8
#2 of 12 in Nature in Zion National Park
Zion's Main Canyon serves as the mighty centerpiece of the Zion National Park. You can explore the 24 km (15 mi) long and 800 m (0.5 mi) deep canyon via one of its seven trails. The Weeping Rock trail is an easy half hour round-trip, making it suitable for the whole family. Experienced hikers might want to try the Angels Landing trail; the four-hour loop features impressive views but is not recommended for those with a fear of heights. The canyon is also home to a number of amenities and attractions, including a visitor center, a human history museum, and lodge. Take a look at our Zion National Park trip planning website to schedule your visit to Zion's Main Canyon and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • Zion's main Canyon is the main attraction of the Zion National Park and is located near the village of Springdale. You can use this part of the Park not even with the car. There are large car parks which go shuttle buses in the main Canyon at the entrance. We were in May there and already in the morning, more than a half an hour have needed to find a parking space. It was incredibly full. With the shuttle bus we went then to the last stop and are there the River Walk followed. The hike in the narrows was not possible due to the relatively high water level. Impressive for us was how green everything was compared to the entire environment. It looked to us like an oasis in the desert. A beautiful landscape surrounded by high rock walls. Unfortunately we had planned a Zion National Park as a stopover and also due to the finding a parking space not enough time yet another hike to make. Next time we plan a definitely more time. Although it was fairly full in the parking lot, the crowds have itself well informed in the Canyon. It is always a few people came to meet us, but we could still enjoy the nature with their animals. At the Grand Canyon was full. In the Canyon itself, there are several ways to leave the shuttle bus. At each stop, there are several hiking trails. Annual pass (America the beautiful) for all national parks ($80) free leads to the Park. Otherwise, the entrance fee is $30 per vehicle.

Where to stay in Zion National Park

If you want to stay inside Zion National Park, you can choose from three campgrounds or the Zion Lodge, which includes motel rooms, cabins, suites, and a restaurant. Two of the campgrounds sit near the south entrance, while the third lies more isolated about a one-hour drive from Zion Canyon along the Kolob Terrace Road. The gateway town of Springdale just south of the park has a wide range of accommodations. Choose from cozy inns and bed and breakfasts, rustic riverside lodges, and clean and simple motels. If everything's full here, try the nearby towns of Virgin and Hurricane.
