Kolob Canyons, Zion National Park

Canyon · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Kolob Canyons is the northwest section of Zion National Park of Utah, United States. The Kolob Canyons are part of the Colorado Plateau region of the park and are noted for their colorful beauty and diverse landscape. This part of Zion National Park is accessed by a park road about 20 miles south of Cedar City, Utah off Interstate 15.In 1847, Mormon farmers from the Salt Lake area became the first people of European descent to settle the Virgin River region. In 1851, the Parowan and Cedar City, Utah areas were settled by Mormons who used the Kolob Canyons area for timber, and for grazing cattle, sheep, and horses. They prospected for mineral deposits, and diverted Kolob water to irrigate crops in the valley below. Mormon settlers named the area Kolob—in Mormon scripture, the nearest star to the planet where God resides.

  • Kolob Canyon is part of Zion National Park, but is located 45 minutes away from the main entrance and the hoards of people that enter the park there. Enter off of Interstate 15 at Exit 40. Almost...  more »

  • This place is breathtaking and has quickly become one of my favorite places to visit especially in early spring. There are some awesome streams to find off the beaten path, there is specifically a naturally occurring Dome. It's almost like an amphitheater. It does take hiking about 3 hours to get to as its off the beaten path but completely amazing and worth it! I suggest going before it gets cold or make sure you wear thermals. It is an amazing place, I would rank it up with some of the more popular national parks.
  • We headed here from Zion when the clouds came in. Once the clouds cleared it revealed a real gem. The viewpoint has amazing views, totally wort the walk. The parking is good, roads are well maintained, there is a picnic area. The paths need a little work but nothing massive.
  • Kolob has all of the beauty of Zion but there are FAR less people. There are several different hikes in the area, for all different types of hikers. I wouldn’t pay the whole parks price JUST to go to Kolob but I’d definitely pay it a visit if you’re already paying for Zion’s. It’s also closer to Cedar City, which is a plus for someone who lives 20 minutes away.
  • Wow! What a majestic place. The towering peaks defy all attempts to describe the beauty of this place. The Kolob Canyons are just a few minutes away from Cedar City and are part of the Zion National Park. A visit to this part of the Zions National Park is absolutely worth. Early morning or late afternoon creates a fantastic atmosphere of lights and shadows mesmerizing even the most avid travelers. The people at the Visitor Center and very nice and helpful.
  • I love the red road in Kolob Canyon. There are some stunning hikes in this area. It is also less crowded than Zion National Park. It is worth the stop on your journey. If you buy a yearly pass for the National Parks, this is a no brainer, but some may find the single day entrance fee a bit steep here.
