Angel's Landing, Zion National Park

4.9
#2 of 306 in Outdoors in Utah
If you're willing to challenge yourself to walk up narrow paths and climb steep ridges at Zion National Park, you can reach Angel's Landing and be rewarded with a majestic view. The trail is considered extremely demanding--especially the final stage. The early part of the hike features plenty of pleasant photo opportunities. As the trail begins to get steeper, any crowds will thin out because most people turn back. Reaching the summit can be dangerous--especially so when wet or icy. It requires scaling some serious heights and using chains anchored in the rocks, so it's not for everyone. This final part of the climb is not intended for children. • We found the hike up fairly easy (took about 90 minutes). The final few hundred yards are very exposed and not for those with height fears. I still suggest they go to the top prior to the chain area.  more »
  • This was an amazing hike. Wear shoes with good grip as it is very steep in some parts and coming down can be slippery especially if you go on a day like me and my wife where it was on and off drizzlin...  more »
  • Angels landing is the 6th stop on the shuttle bus which runs as early as 6am from the parks visitor centre which you can park your car at. I would recommend taking the earliest bus as it will get crow...  more »

  • Wonderful experience . Due to heavy traffic, we were not allowed to enter scenic drive by car. So we went for bike renting down the hill, we rent for one day cost us $25 (including helmet). We did Angle landing hiking 5mi (up and down). Those whole love biking it would be an awesome experience.
  • A strenuous hike consisting of steep cliffs and extreme heights and overlooks. I rate this hike a 5 star because of it's many turns and switch ups. Going from a mild walk to a cliff hanging endurance of mind and body. Some won't find this challenging much, but to most it will be a lifelong journey they will never forget.
  • Angels Landing is one of the most popular and exhilarating hikes in Zion National Park. If you have a fear of heights, you will not enjoy this trail. It's quite steep, so could be difficult for those out of shape. From shuttle stop #6, the Grotto, cross Virgin River on the footbridge and turn right for West Rim Trail. It starts out as a gradual climb following the river upstream. Then, it gets quite steep as it goes through a number of switchbacks into Refrigerator Canyon. The trail levels off as it it goes through this narrow canyon. At the end, you'll hike up Walters Wiggles, a dozen or so extremely steep and short switchbacks. At the top is Scouts Lookout, a good turnaround point if you can't make it up to the top. There's a nice view of Angels Landing from here and it gives you a good idea of what you're getting into. Angels Landing Trail splits from here and leads to the top in about a half-mile. The trail follows a narrow ridge with 1000+ foot drop offs on either side. The park service has installed chains along some of the really narrow sections to hold on to. Overall, the worst part is passing people, which inevitably happens at the tightest points. This is a really popular hike so try to arrive early to avoid traffic jams as much as possible. Once you make it to the top, it's all worth the effort. The views from up here are among the best in Zion. Definitely a must-do in Zion National Park.
  • One of the coolest hikes around! Awesome views and exciting trials. It's is claimed as dangerous but if you are smart this hike is a breeze.
  • Great hike and views, very fun trail to hike. The hike is not nearly as dangerous as advertised as there are chains and rails everywhere. Most of the time they aren't really necessary and they are just there for your psychological safety

Where to stay in Zion National Park

If you want to stay inside Zion National Park, you can choose from three campgrounds or the Zion Lodge, which includes motel rooms, cabins, suites, and a restaurant. Two of the campgrounds sit near the south entrance, while the third lies more isolated about a one-hour drive from Zion Canyon along the Kolob Terrace Road. The gateway town of Springdale just south of the park has a wide range of accommodations. Choose from cozy inns and bed and breakfasts, rustic riverside lodges, and clean and simple motels. If everything's full here, try the nearby towns of Virgin and Hurricane.
