  • Must-visit if you're in the Park. It's not the coolest place to see the giant sequoias, but the Mariposa Grove (which is nicer) is closed and no official date to reopen. A heavy, about two and a half miles round trip (back on the grassy Knoll, a mile difference in height between two points), which makes the Trek a bit tiring for those who are not accustomed or have small children, but is beautiful and worth it anyway. Anyway, take water in the summer, and worth a visit to the toilet before you begin the descent ... lol for those who enjoy nature, nice place.

  • Since Mariposa is closed, we went here. Well worth the trip. When they say it could take 2 1/2 hours, that was our experience. We are older, reasonably strong, but the hike back up out of the valley w...  more »
  • The trail is pretty steep downhill to get to the grove which means you have to put in some work to get back uphill to your car. The grove is definitely not as big as the ones in Sequoia National Park ...  more »

Where to stay in Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park offers something for everyone. Choose from upscale or historic hotels, a well-appointed lodge, motel rooms, rustic cabins, canvas tent cabins, and developed campgrounds. Yosemite Village in the heart of the valley is the most convenient place to stay, but other accommodations line the roads leading to the village. If you can't secure a place inside the park, try the various lodges, inns, bed and breakfasts, cabins, cottages, and motels on the roads leading in from the west. Staying any further out can cost you valuable time that you could be spending hiking, biking, and sightseeing. To escape from the crowds in the valley, reserve a campsite at Crane Flat or Hodgdon Meadow, which are far enough out to provide solitude but close enough to reach major valley attractions in less than half an hour. Campgrounds along Tioga Road see even fewer crowds. If you plan to visit in summer, you must reserve accommodations (even campsites) well in advance, as Yosemite remains extremely popular with both visitors from afar and those based in California.
