Sentinel Dome, Yosemite National Park

5.0
#7 of 25 in Parks in Yosemite National Park
A notable rock formation in Yosemite National Park, Sentinel Dome sits next to another famous domed formation. You can hike to the summit at 1,264.9 m (4,150 ft) above the park's floor or travel there on horseback. While the hike is challenging, the payoff is a remarkable view of the moraines formed by the retreat of an ancient glacier. This rock's nearly spherical shape creates a remarkable sight among the craggy mountains, and you can peer down into Yosemite Valley from this viewpoint. • The 1 mile trail from the trailhead car park to Sentinel Dome was relatively easy and even the dome itself wasn't too bad and then you are rewarded with amazing views of Yosemite and the valley. Bette...  more »
  • Before you can enjoy the view of Sentinel Dome, you must first get a hike. This hike is, however, well to do and you can of course breaks whenever you want. Sentinel Dome gives you a 360 degree view of Yosemite NP and is truly stunning. I found it more impressive than Glacier Point. Take plenty of water during the hike (especially in the summer months), this you'll surely need it.

Where to stay in Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park offers something for everyone. Choose from upscale or historic hotels, a well-appointed lodge, motel rooms, rustic cabins, canvas tent cabins, and developed campgrounds. Yosemite Village in the heart of the valley is the most convenient place to stay, but other accommodations line the roads leading to the village. If you can't secure a place inside the park, try the various lodges, inns, bed and breakfasts, cabins, cottages, and motels on the roads leading in from the west. Staying any further out can cost you valuable time that you could be spending hiking, biking, and sightseeing. To escape from the crowds in the valley, reserve a campsite at Crane Flat or Hodgdon Meadow, which are far enough out to provide solitude but close enough to reach major valley attractions in less than half an hour. Campgrounds along Tioga Road see even fewer crowds. If you plan to visit in summer, you must reserve accommodations (even campsites) well in advance, as Yosemite remains extremely popular with both visitors from afar and those based in California.
