Old Faithful, Yellowstone National Park

Hot Spring Nature / Park
This cone geyser is an icon of Yellowstone National Park. The team who discovered Old Faithful described it as “the perfect geyser.” Though not the tallest or largest in the park, the geyser is one of the most popular for its beauty, size, and regularity of eruptions--almost every 91 minutes, hence its name. Watch the explosion of boiling water reach a height of 32 to 56 m (106 to 185 ft) for around 1.5 to 5 minutes, giving you plenty of time to take photos. The cafeteria in the nearby lodge boasts great views if you want to watch the show over a sandwich. They also do take-out. Where to stay in Yellowstone National Park

As one of the U.S.'s most popular national parks, Yellowstone provides plenty of options for sleeping within its boundaries. Choose from lodges, inns, cabins, hotels, motels, and campgrounds throughout the park. Most of the structured accommodations lie in the park's most-visited areas, such as Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Falls, Old Faithful Geyser, and Yellowstone Lake. Staying on the northern side of the lake puts you right in the heart of the park, making it relatively convenient to visit other areas. Resorts, lodges, and guest ranches line the road just outside the park's east entrance, and a cluster of motels and hotels fills the town of West Yellowstone near the west entrance. You can also opt for lodges and inns to the north in Gardiner, Montana, or find nearly every type of accommodation to the south in Jackson, Wyoming. Staying outside the park is fine if you plan to drive through in a day and catch the highlights, but you'll want to spend at least one night inside the park if you plan to explore it more thoroughly.

  • Disappointed when it finally erupted but I guess it was to be expected since its been hyped so much. The rest of the parkwas great.  more »
  • You just have to see it, it's a wonderful natural spectacle and there is a sense of awe seeing the geyser erupt in a fountain of water and steam.  more »
  • I think the hike to Biscuit Basin was the best hike we did in the park with kids. Old Faithful was a must, but we were able to see better geysers on the hike. Luck played a role...right place at the r...  more »

  • First week of May was the perfect time to go. We had gorgeous weather all week. Beautiful mountain ranges from Buffalo to Yellowstone! Old Faithful was just as her namesake claims. First real vacation ever and it was amazing. Thank you to all the Wyoming DOT workers for keeping the scenic routes as clean as you can for us. We clearly see you put your life on the line up there. Thank you.
  • We waited for 45 minutes to watch this geyser shoot 15 feet in the air for over two minutes. It was incredible. There are pools that you can walk around. It's a shame though for those who cannot read all of the signs saying DO NOT TOUCH THE WATER, STAY ON THE BOARDWALK. Enjoy from safety.
  • Old Faithful, need I say more. Yes, don't try to stop in with your motorhome or camper because you will not be able to stop unless lucky. Beautiful scenery but very crowded. The cafeteria food was alright but wouldn't do it again unless starving like we were.
  • Always great. We have seen Old Faithful erupt so many times we get complacent about it, but it is still great. A large geyser that is easy to get to and (mostly) on schedule. Note you can go behind it for a different view with fewer crowds.
  • I suppose it is just something you have to do when coming to yellowstone. Stand here with the other couple hundred people and watch Old Faithful. That said, it is actually pretty cool.
