Old Faithful, Yellowstone National Park
Categories: Hot Springs, Nature & Parks
This cone geyser is an icon of Yellowstone National Park. The team who discovered Old Faithful described it as “the perfect geyser.” Though not the tallest or largest in the park, the geyser is one of the most popular for its beauty, size, and regularity of eruptions--almost every 91 minutes, hence its name. Watch the explosion of boiling water reach a height of 32 to 56 m (106 to 185 ft) for around 1.5 to 5 minutes, giving you plenty of time to take photos. The cafeteria in the nearby lodge boasts great views if you want to watch the show over a sandwich. They also do take-out. You can't go to Yellowstone without joining at least 500 others to view this historic geyser spout. All those people you stand or sit with are just as awed as you are! Old Faithful is just that - it s... read more »
SUPER touristy!!! We visited during the off season (OCT16) and there were literally hundreds of people crammed together to see old faithful erupt. Busloads of people.... Unless this is on your bucket ... read more »

Truly this is a must see on any visit to Yellowstone. It really is that impressive. Accurately predictable to within 10 minutes. Get some delicious ice cream from the Old Faithful Inn and pick a nice spot. Crowds gather for each daytime eruption around the large circular viewing area. For a really neat experience go out after midnight. Old Faithful under the full moon is like magic. Will never forget that experience. Good food and amenities right here so hang around before and after to let the geyser only crowds dissipate.
Yellowstone is beautiful and it's really quite easy to see Old Faithful without getting trapped in a crowd. I would recommend leaving as the eruptions are dying down. Otherwise you might hit a bit of traffic getting out of the parking lot.
What an impressive nature wonder! I was awestruck by how large this geyser is. It erupts like clock work within minutes of predicted times. We visited Old Faithful at Yellowstone National Park during heavy tourist season. The park is well maintained despite the number of visitors everyday. Parking can be a challenge during the early afternoon. We were able to get a seat just by being there a little early before one of the predicted times. There are Park Rangers there at Old Faithful answering questions from visitors. Don't forget to visit Geyser Hill and surrounding areas to see other geothermal wonders within walking distance (take water!). There is a Visitor Center that is new and very informative for all levels - children to adult. Other services offered nearby are a gas station, general store, lodging, and different levels of dining options such as cafeteria, diner, and a couple sit down restaurants. There is even auto repair available. You also must visit the historic Old Faithful Lodge - even if you just pop into the lobby.
Not the best geyser in Yellowstone National Park, buy the most accessible. Tons of amenities nearby and ample parking. If you are planning a trip to the park, make sure you add old faithful to your list. Erupting every 1 hour and 38 minutes (-/+ 10 minutes), dependable and breath taking.
Prediction time was within the plus/minus 10! Worth a stop & the visitors center was very nice. Bathrooms were clean too. We were there early & it got busy but we were able to get in and out easy enough. I heard from 11 to about 6 pm is chaos and you might not even get into the parking lot for several hours.
