Lamar Valley, Yellowstone National Park

#1 of 139 in Outdoors in Wyoming
At Lamar Valley, mountain peaks gently rise from the distance and a small river flows at this picturesque spot inside Yellowstone National Park where wildlife abounds. Photographers bring their gear and wait for bears, wolves, elk, bison, and other wildlife to appear. You can fish along the river with a permit; anglers wrangle for cutthroat and rainbow trout here. To get the best out of this small gem in Yellowstone, take an organized wildlife excursion. Lamar Valley is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Yellowstone National Park Edition.

If you drive in from the south the Lamar Valley is quite a hike but it is well worth it. You will see hundreds of Bison. There are also frequent bears, antelope, elk and even some moose.  more »

Stop reading reviews and just go! Make sure you have time to sit and watch for a while. And try to get there early in the morning.  more »

If Yellowstone wanted to maintain the Park beauty, they should go a mile above the Junction and make the boundary there. This is such a poor desert that the few animals do not make up for the drive. I...  more »

Amazing. Beautiful. Be patient. Take binoculars for the wolves. . Go early in the morning. Let the bison run around your car.

Simply spectacular! Big meadows. You can stop and grab your binoculars to watch the wildlife. We saw a coyote on the road.

Once upon a time not so long ago the entire continental United States resembled the Lamar Valley. All that is gone forever. Only a few thousand acres remain. For the sake of humanity and for our grand children and their grand children, we must do everything in our power to protect what little we have left. Right now as I write the entire concept of public lands is under assault. If we don't fight back, future generations will look upon our generation as thieves and cowards; because, once it is gone, it is gone forever. Once the Koch Brothers get ahold of it, it is theirs not ours.

Only found out about this area of Yellowstone from an internet search and sooo glad we did! This gem is well worth the drive. We went through twice on our trip to Yellowstone. Amazing wildlife! I wish we had brought binoculars!

Great place to be in the springtime. Bring some binoculars. Lots of wildlife coming out of hibernation and feeding on the winter kills and springtime vegetation.

Where to stay in Yellowstone National Park

As one of the U.S.'s most popular national parks, Yellowstone provides plenty of options for sleeping within its boundaries. Choose from lodges, inns, cabins, hotels, motels, and campgrounds throughout the park. Most of the structured accommodations lie in the park's most-visited areas, such as Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Falls, Old Faithful Geyser, and Yellowstone Lake. Staying on the northern side of the lake puts you right in the heart of the park, making it relatively convenient to visit other areas. Resorts, lodges, and guest ranches line the road just outside the park's east entrance, and a cluster of motels and hotels fills the town of West Yellowstone near the west entrance. You can also opt for lodges and inns to the north in Gardiner, Montana, or find nearly every type of accommodation to the south in Jackson, Wyoming. Staying outside the park is fine if you plan to drive through in a day and catch the highlights, but you'll want to spend at least one night inside the park if you plan to explore it more thoroughly.
