Lamar Valley, Yellowstone National Park
Categories: Scenic Drives, Tourist Spots, Outdoor Activities
At Lamar Valley, mountain peaks gently rise from the distance and a small river flows at this picturesque spot inside Yellowstone National Park where wildlife abounds. Photographers bring their gear and wait for bears, wolves, elk, bison, and other wildlife to appear. You can fish along the river with a permit; anglers wrangle for cutthroat and rainbow trout here. To get the best out of this small gem in Yellowstone, take an organized wildlife excursion. Lamar Valley is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Yellowstone National Park Edition.

I love going to lamar valley, the wolves are normally very active here and the mountains are beautiful.
Went here back in 2008 with my brother and father. Did a five day hike and it was amazing. Saw wolves, moose, and buffalo a plenty. Great rangers showed us an amazing wolf encounter. Had a buffalo herd move through our camp at night. And came upon a mom and baby moose while walking through a field. Strongly recommend this area for some good old fashion hike in and out.
Lamar Valley is beautiful. There are beautiful valleys with the river flowing through it. There are bison everyone in the valley and some evenings you can even see wolves. There is not much geological activity in this area if that is what you are looking for.
Of all the locations in the park, I think Lamar Valley is my favorite. Since I love wildlife, it really shouldn't be a surprise. Bison are commonly seen here in giant herds, as well as pronghorn and the occasional wolf. There are plenty of pull-offs to stop and admire the views as well. It is just a shame that there aren't more trails located through the area, but I can only imagine the issues that would cause!
Make sure you spend enough time in this part of Yellowstone. It's well worth it. There are plenty of things to see and wildlife is in abundance. Sure, you'll see bison but there are wolves (provided you have a very good set of binoculars), bears (seasonal), coyotes and plenty of birds to be spotted. The scenery is spectacular with the river meandering through the valley. Visited in late September. The park was still very busy but this place is awesome.
We drove through the Lamar valley on our way to the Beartooth pass. We saw buffalo on the road but no bears. Bummer. It is a beautiful place. Take your time and enjoy this ride.
