  • There are two different access points to this preserve, one from skyline blvd, and one off of Hwy 1. Of the two, I definitely prefer the one by the coast; if you go to the other, you might have a very steep hike up on your return trip, rather than having a nice gradual climb and finishing your trip on a descent. Some of the trails can be very steep and in the dry summer, the dirt is loose and not the safest. My favorite is Purisima Creek Trail, which if you start on the ocean side, is shaded and lushly green all year round.
  • Parking can be scare, suggesting to go early in the morning or late afternoon when people would be returning form their afternoon, morning hikes. Nature was on full blast in there. Redwoods everywhere but not gigantic ones. Not to bad of a drive from SF. Great spot if you are not wanting to drive too far but be in nature. Banana slugs along the trail.
  • Purisima is a great large park to visit nestled in the Santa Cruz mountains. It's pretty hilly, but you can plan your hike to be more or less so. Either way be prepared to go up and down some steep paths. When I was hiking there I saw families out in normal street clothes and they were managing fine. Ultimately, the inclines are worth it for the great views and redwoods around you.
  • Beautiful park with outstanding views of the hills covered with lush green trees. On clearer days you can see the ocean from the ridge trails. If you like to take a serious hike with several steep uphill and downhill segments you will enjoy this park. Parking might be a bit tricky on busy weekends.
  • For lot parking on the weekends, get here early morning, or when the first wave of hikers is leaving in the early afternoon. Otherwise you will be parking on the road (park Behind the white line to avoid a ticket) Lots of well maintained trails, young redwoods (it was logged out to build/rebuild SF a hundred years ago), gorgeous views of Half Moon Bay and Pillar Point, and it's all downhill. You can park a car at the base and walk all the way down, or hike in a mile or 4, then come back up. Portopotties on site, no running water.
