While staying in SF ahead of the 101 drive to LA, we were lucky enough to meet Wayne and Jill Hooper, who are docents at this establishment, and who told us about it, and how pleased we were that they... more »
We didn't enter the mansion (not interested), so this review is about the garden. Every botanical garden we have visited had its own personality, and this one adds one more personality to the list for... more »
This is a beautiful garden. It is simply planted relying at this time of year on massed displays of begonias and to a lesser extent roses and herbs. So though it may describe itself as an English gard... more »
The estate is just wonderful! Loved the interior of the house, main floor only. Hand carved mahogany throughout. The extensive gardens are amazing. Like others have noted the food at the cafe is good, the bathrooms are clean. Very nice gift shop. My only disappointment was that I am curious about the whole house and wished to see the cellar & upstairs. We did a self-guided tour but when we go back at Christmas plan to do a guided tour with a docent.
Wonderful place to visit as a local and as a tourist. The grounds and gardens are stunning. The main house museum is quite fascinating for all ages. The volunteer's working there share their knowledge of all things Filoli. Its most impressive. You can find staff in every room who are eager to share facts and stories about the property and families that lived there. My visit included a little face to face time with their resident peacock, Percy. Seems he was enamored with my bright red coat.
After the rains that they Bay Area has had the past couple of weeks, now is the best time to go to Filoli. Most of the flowers are in bloom and look absolutely breathtaking. The flowers, especially the wisteria, smells really nice. The staff are really friendly and helpful. It's $20 per person (adult). Great way to spend your day just admiring the gardens and the house.
This historic property, just a short drive from Silicon Valley, is the perfect place to take your visiting parents. The house is magnificent, but the grounds are even more impressive, so be sure to go when the weather is nice. Plan to spend several hours and bring your camera. We visited in late winter when the bulbs and camellias were at their peak but the trees were not yet leafed out; I imagine it is beautiful every time of year. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and not intrusive; they are there to answer any questions you might have. Worth the price of admission, particularly if you are a gardener. Discounts for seniors and children; children under 5 are free. Consider a membership if you plan to visit often. Just a couple of words of caution: Quite a bit of walking is required on some rugged paths if you want to see it all, and the paths are not suited for walkers or strollers. Also restrooms are few and far between.
If you like flowers, don't skip this place. Spring time is the best place to visit as all the flowers are in bloom. This is a nice historical place. The movie they show continuously gives the history of this place.
