Chimney Bluffs State Park, Wolcott
(4.6/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web)
Chimney Bluffs State Park is a 597acre state park in the town of Huron in Wayne County, New York. The park is situated on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, east of Sodus Bay. From the park's hiking trails, visitors can view the large clay formations at the water's edge for which the park is named.GeologyThe bluffs are formed from eroded drumlins, teardrop-shaped hills of glacial till that were deposited and shaped by glaciers during the most recent ice age. The erosive power of wind, rain, snow, and waves has formed the landscape into sharp pinnacles. Although the pinnacles and cliffs, some of which rise up to above the lake shore, have existed for thousands of years, they are constantly changing and further eroding. The average erosion of bluffs is 1to per year. The Lake Ontario shoreline from Sodus Bay to Oswego has many bluffs, of which Chimney Bluffs is the most visited.Park history and featuresThe Chimney Bluffs area has been a landmark for many years. According to the pamphlet given by the park, smugglers used the area as a landing point while transporting liquor from Canada during Prohibition. The area was acquired by the state of New York in 1963 after having previously been operated informally as a privately owned recreation area.

  • We visited on a chilly Sunday morning and it was gorgeous! There is a decent sized parking lot. There was a self pay meter but I believe that since we visited in the off season, the meter was covered ...  more »

  • Striking scenery. This place is just gorgeous. We had a great time there even though we only had a couple of hours; the light at sunset was just picture-perfect. The restrooms were clean, too, which is always a plus. Overall great place for hiking, picnics, and photography.
  • The main loop is nice an wide. Till you hit the Bluff trail. Gorgeous views. But the difficulty switches to moderate. The Bluff trail is the most travailed trail of the 4 or so trails. Dont forget to bring $5 for parking in the main area.
  • Amazing state park. My family has been going once a year for at least 10 yrs. Amazing scenery which changes every yr. You can walk a rim path or by the water. Well worth a visit.
  • Unique among New York state parks. Peaceful visit for the novice hiker. Worth the trip.
  • A decent beginner level hike. Walk down the rocky shore of Lake Ontario, and see the chimney bluffs. On your return trip you walk over the bluffs for a different view.
