Chimney Bluffs State Park, Wolcott

4.6
Chimney Bluffs State Park is a 597acre state park in the town of Huron in Wayne County, New York. The park is situated on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, east of Sodus Bay. From the park's hiking trails, visitors can view the large clay formations at the water's edge for which the park is named.GeologyThe bluffs are formed from eroded drumlins, teardrop-shaped hills of glacial till that were deposited and shaped by glaciers during the most recent ice age. The erosive power of wind, rain, snow, and waves has formed the landscape into sharp pinnacles. Although the pinnacles and cliffs, some of which rise up to above the lake shore, have existed for thousands of years, they are constantly changing and further eroding. The average erosion of bluffs is 1to per year. The Lake Ontario shoreline from Sodus Bay to Oswego has many bluffs, of which Chimney Bluffs is the most visited.Park history and featuresThe Chimney Bluffs area has been a landmark for many years. According to the pamphlet given by the park, smugglers used the area as a landing point while transporting liquor from Canada during Prohibition. The area was acquired by the state of New York in 1963 after having previously been operated informally as a privately owned recreation area.

  • Excellent, easy hike up to the Chimney Bluffs, beautiful view over Lake Ontario. Good signage for the different trails. Clean rest rooms at the front of the park. Be Careful on the bluffs though, some...  more »
  • We did the bluffs trail and it was a nice hike. I am afraid of heights and clumsy so I stayed on the inner trail but the sites were beautiful. The trail is really a hike in the woods with tree roots, ...  more »
  • Unfortunately the level of Lake Ontario does not allow walking along the shore. But if you have time, it is absolutely amazing.  more »

  • Great view on Ontario. The park is small and quite with barbeque area and great view on Ontario. The tail to bluffs goes through forest over sandy cliff and sometimes it can be very challenging. Especially after the rain it turns into muddy mess in some places. I would recommend very comfortable footwear if you plan hiking
  • This place is Awesome, you have to walk in between the woods to reach a beautiful spot from where u can experience the lake and nature.. Walking is quite tough .. feels like trekking. Dont forget to wear good shoes and get back before it gets dark in the evening I would suggest this place to all the adventure people.
  • Truly one of a kind place, there are many bluffs along Lake Ontario but these are unique. There's trails along the tops of the bluffs, along the beach and through the woods so there's hiking for almost every kind of hiker.
  • Beautiful and peaceful viewing, however for the $5 parking fee, the trails are relatively unkempt, possibly making the park less accessible and safe for some.
  • Being on Lake Ontario is the best. Great place to take the family and enjoy the day.
