  • I didn't know what to expect as I wanted to experience it rather than read up on it. We visited on a glorious weather day in November. I don't think I could ever get tired of seeing the statue of John...  more »

  • I really enjoy the movies of John Wayne and when I got the chance to visit the museum I did. It's well laid out, easy to tour, not too expensive, and you can learn a little more than you would expect about the life times of a movie legend.
  • Awesome place. Learn history of John Wayne and see pretty cool memorabilia. Kids enjoyed the little tour as did the adults.
  • A short 30-minute drive south of Des Moines is the childhood home and birthplace of the most 'Merican of Americans! That's correct folks, John Wayne's birthplace is in Winterset Iowa. Folklore has it that John Wayne was born of Chuck Norris' beard before time started and came here prior to Captain Kirk being born in Riverside, IA in the future....Winning! The birthplace is preserved and they have to be given a number of times per day. The museum that accompanies the home is located just behind it and has quite a lovely gift shop. The reason we know this is because we weren't too keen on the $15 admission price for us or the $8 for our kids. The prices were fair, but we were really there just to take pictures and see what it was all about. For anyone who is a big John Wayne fan this place may induce priapism! The statue outside is great for taking pictures and the childhood home is modest and very well kept. It's totally worth making the joint down here to see the place, and while you're here you should consider seeing The Bridges of Madison County which lie between 2 and 15 miles in any direction from Winterset. Word had it as well the one of the bridges is located in a park just a few blocks from the home. Game. Set. John Wayne
  • House and grounds very well kept. Great souvenir store with lots of well-priced items
  • I was born in Muscatine County in 1935, and moved to Oregon in 1957. I spent a month of April, 2015 with my family, and visited the Museum on my way home to Oregon. It was just before the Grand Opening. I enjoyed the visit very much as I have been a fan of John for all my life
