Wind Cave National Park

4
Caves · Hiking Trails
Wind Cave National Park presents one of the United States' few remaining intact prairies. The tall, expansive stretch of grass here sustains wildlife big and small, from bison and elk to prairie dogs. The park's defining feature is the cave from which it takes its name. Wind Cave features 226.06 km (140.47 mi) of discovered passageways, making it one of the world's most extensive cave systems. It also remains distinct for its calcite boxwork formations--about 95 percent of these formations discovered throughout the world are located in Wind Cave. Wildlife viewing and cave tours are the park's main draws, but visitors also hike, bike, and ride horses here. Our United States travel route builder app allows you to schedule your trip to Wind Cave National Park, learn about its attractions, and find out about where else to go during your holiday.

Where to stay in Wind Cave National Park

Wind Cave National Park offers a single developed campground as the sole accommodation inside the park, so you'll have to look to surrounding towns if you don't plan to travel with your tent. The town of Hot Springs, a 15-minute drive south of the park, serves as the most convenient option. Custer is about 25 minutes north. Both places offer a collection of inns, bed and breakfasts, lodges, and motels, but you might find Custer the better option if you plan to visit Badlands National Park and the Black Hills. Rapid City (about an hour's drive north of the park) works well as a base for day trips to all three of the area's natural attractions.
