The Stonewall Jackson's Headquarters Museum is a historic house located at 415 North Braddock Street in the Historic District of Winchester, Virginia.HistoryThe Gothic Revival style house was built in 1854 by local dentist William McP. Fuller, who named it "Alta Vista" for its scenic view over open hillsides facing east across Winchester. Fuller sold it in 1856 to Lieutenant Colonel Lewis Tilghman Moore, commander of the 31st Virginia Militia. Later, while commanding the 4th Virginia Infantry in the Confederate States Army, Moore offered his home to serve as the headquarters for Major General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. Jackson moved into the house in November 1861, shortly after taking command of the Valley District of the Department of Northern Virginia. Jackson was joined by his wife, Mary Anna, in December 1861. From this house, Jackson planned his Shenandoah Valley defenses and campaigns, starting with the Romney Expedition. The Jacksons lived in the house until March 1862, when the general left Winchester to begin his Valley Campaign.

  • Jackson's winter headquarters from 1861-62 is an amazing historic site. It offers multiple period pieces, many unique to Stonewall himself: prayer book, locks of hair, prayer table, camp chair with or...  read more »
  • We just visited "Alta Vista", Jackson's Headquarters earlier this week. The female Museum Docent was wonderful, colorful and full of knowledge. I am sorry I do not remember her name to give praise here.Jackson is one of my favorite Generals and have read much about him. She knew it all and more. It is a shame the town had encroached onto the property where the front of the house faces other homes on the row. On the stairs was a Battle Flag of General Imboden, my GGGrandfather served under in the 62nd Mounted Infantry. Well worth the visit for every history buff! I wished I had wall space for John Paul Strain's "Stonewall's Return" I did not realize it had 3D qualities when seen under the right light.
  • Fun place to take the family and learn some history while you're at it.
  • Great History! Brian(the docent) was great & so knowledgable! He was really engaging!! Such an amazing artifact to be able to see first hand where the great stonewall jackson lived. Well worth the time and money!!
  • Apparently the "African American" that posted the earlier review is the reason why we still have racism in America. Take the time to educate yourself before you express pyre idiocy on a matter that you yourself are helping to create.
  • Excellent museum. I'm sorry the one reviewer didn't take time to find out the real history before he judged the museum.
