Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park, Wilson

The opening ceremony for the Little League Tournament of State Champions was held here, and we had a blast. The large, open grass field is perfect for playing catch or just hanging out on a blanket. And the raised stage in the corner is set up well for musical performances or speeches. Of course, the main attractions here are the large whirligig structures surrounding the field...there are over a dozen of them scattered about, and each one is unique and interesting. The shaded structure outside the grass is perfect for banquets too. A great place to gather and have fun in the heart of Wilson!

I have visited here twice it’s absolutely amazing what this man did. I have been building small scale things for over forty years and would be lucky to have built one of these large ones in a lifetime. I study them and realize how resourceful he was, I recognize many parts they are composed of but would have never thought of to use them together the way he did. I can’t help but wonder when did he sleep as many as he built. I would love to have had the honor of meeting him, one of the Greatest Generation.

Such a cool place! The whirligigs are amazing! There's a big open grass area to run, and blow bubbles and music playing over speakers. Definitely worth a drive to see. There seemed to be a lot of great shops in downtown Wilson as well, but we were there on a Monday and it seemed like everything was closed. We'll definitely go back again!

Really unique place to come and see some impressive art. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a stop at this well maintained park. Massive colorful "windmills" scattered across the park are impressive and something like I've never seen before. While the park is small, there's also a stage and some places to grab a bite. Check the parks schedule, because it looks like the town puts on multiple events a year here. A clean town is in walking distance with some boutique style shopping. A very cool find.
