Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, Williamsburg

#3 of 6 in Museums in Williamsburg
Inside Colonial Williamsburg, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum adds a layer to the town's history with a large collection of folk art. Abby Aldrich Rockefeller's original collection of 424 pieces makes up the core of the museum, featuring primarily South American and African American artwork dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Textiles, sculptures, and paintings by self-trained artists experiment with bold colors and shapes, some of which depict images from American history. This museum in Williamsburg, while starting a new enlargement of their facilities are, none the less, moving forward with new and important exhibitions. The latest is a study of 18th Century fabrics which show the fashions for women AND men and the way they would be used in each strata of the classes.

Where to stay in Williamsburg

Williamsburg offers lodgings for every taste, including four-star resorts, quaint inns, and budget-friendly hotels. Accommodations in the city's historical district provide easy access to all of the area's major attractions, but they also charge much higher prices than equally comfortable guesthouses in some of the outlying neighborhoods. For a genuine Virginian experience, consider pitching a tent or renting a cottage in one of the area's popular campgrounds, which offer shuttle services to the city's major attractions and provide free Wi-Fi, cable TV, and fenced-in areas for pets.
